New Egypt, NJ (Feb. 23) -- Novice drivers at New Egypt Speedway will get a boost right off the starting blocks, as Mid-State Communications returns as title sponsor of the central Jersey speedway's Rookie Sportsman series for 2001.

For the second year, Mid-State Communications, the Trenton firm which supplies all radio systems in use at the track and a variety of fan-oriented products, will present trophies to all winners in New Egypt's eight-race Rookie Sportsman series, as well as a hefty $500 check to the series champion on Rookie Graduation Day, May 19. Last season, Mid-State Communications President Jim Potts donned a cap and gown and distributed diplomas to all series participants at the final race, prior to their "graduation" into the Sportsman division.

"It's all about getting new blood into the sport," said Potts, who also underwrites a special event for New Egypt's Modified "future winners" in August. "We want to get these new drivers off to a good start, and keep them excited about racing."

In that same vein, New Egypt's Rookie Class of 2001 will attend a pre-season orientation session with two-time track Modified champion Billy Pauch. It's the third year the top-rated professional racer is volunteering his time to instruct the novice drivers on how to race safely and successfully. The free-of-charge Rookie orientation with Professor Pauch is scheduled for 10 am on Saturday, March 24, prior to the track's general test-and-tune practice session.

New Egypt's Rookie Sportsman division looks strong for 2001, with 14 drivers already signed up to compete. Drivers are considered Rookies if they have not previously driven a full-size race car on any oval track (with the exception of Enduro competition) on more than three occasions. Those eligible for Rookie status are urged to contact the speedway at (609) 758-1900 prior to March 24 to register for the free class and the Mid-State Communications series.

New Egypt Speedway to set for a March 31 season opener, featuring big-block Modifieds, Sportsman, Street Stocks and the Rookie class. For information about pit licenses, reserved pit parking or rules, please call the speedway office at (609) 758-1900.
