Ehret, Stroble Among Feature Winners in MTD Night at Mansfield
MANSFIELD, Ohio - Doug Ehret and Shawn Stroble were among the five feature winners during MTD Employees Night action at the Mansfield Motorsports Speedway Saturday, August 7.
Ehret, of Massillon, swept through the late model division, setting fast time, winning the dash, a heat race and the 25-lap feature. In the feature race, Ehret took the top spot after a mid-race caution period, passing Akron's Joey Dennewitz, who finished second. Early-race leader Rick Sibila, of Massillon, finished third.
Ehret leads the season point battle over Mike Smith of Akron. Smith finished 10th in the feature, hampered by damage from a heat-race accident.
Stroble nearly duplicated Ehret's sweep. An Urbana resident, Stroble qualified seventh-fastest and thereby didn't participate in the dash, but he won his heat race and the 25-lap feature.
Stroble jumped out to a big lead in the main event before a mid-race caution bunched the field. He then had to fend off a strong challenge from Doug Neel of Galion for the win. The victory was Stroble's fifth of the season and helped him maintain the lead in the season points' championship.
Baldy Baker, Jr. of Strasburg took third in the feature event. Baker's crew was forced to make an engine change between the heat races and the main event. The team completed the swap in time for Baker to answer the bell, get the third-place finish and remain second in the points' race.
In other feature action, Chet Fry of Creston won the 15-lap pure stock feature over Massillon's Dan Winger. The pure stock main featured a multi-car crash on the back stretch on the first lap that damaged or eliminated many cars, including fast qualifier Brad Fields of Mansfield and season-point leader Bryce Scott of Canton. Fields finished 14th and Scott 12th as a result of the accident.
Shannon Gregory of Crestline swept the stockers division competition for the night. Gregory was the fast qualifier, won the dash, a heat and took the 15-lap main event. Gregory is the division points leader.
Roger Olar of Galion won the 12-lap feature for the figure-eight compacts, a race which featured several near hits at the crossover in the final laps.
The regular divisions are idle until Saturday, August 21 as the Mansfield Motorsports Speedway hosts a two-day event featuring the ISMA super modifieds and HOSS sprint cars Friday-Saturday, August 13-14.
