Leicht, Carlson, Gille, and Bilderback take "Smackdown" Qualifier Heat Races during the 40th annual National Short Track Championships at Rockford (IL) Speedway.

(Loves Park, Illinois; 09/24/05): The ASA Late Model Series Presented by GM Performance Parts are at the Rockford (IL) Speedway for day three of the 40th annual National Short Track Championships. This is race number 13 of 14 on the 2005 schedule as the Chicago International Trucks 100 will highlight the ASA Late Model Series portion of the NSTC05!

Saturday's events for the ASA Late Model Series are now complete as four 20-lap "Smackdown" Qualifier Heat Races were ran and each took the top five and locked them into tomorrow's Chicago International Trucks 100. Stephen Leicht, Ryan Carlson, Tom Gille, and Ricky Bilderback each started on the pole and all four lead all 20 laps to each post the wins in their respective "Smackdown" Qualifier Heat Races.

In the first "Smackdown" Current ASA Late Model Series Points Leader, Stephen Leicht started on the pole and beat out outside pole-sitter, Peter Cozzolino to the first corner. From their the Asheville, North Carolina driver made it look easy in leading all 20 laps to score the win. Cozzolino settled for second as Doug Mahlik, Brian Campbell, and Brent Downey rounded out the top five and all transferred to tomorrow's feature.

The second "Smackdown" Qualifier Heat race saw hometown favorite, Ryan Carlson also start on the pole and the Loves Park, Illinois would also lead all 20 laps to score the win in front of the hometown crowd! Keeton Hanks finished second ahead of Jesse Saunders, Jason Tyler, and Travis Dassow would complete the top five.

In the third "Smackdown" another Rockford favorite, Tom Gille led the field to the green flag and made short work of the field as the Winnebago, Illinois veteran also led all 20 laps to pick up the heat race win. Chad Wood finished second over Kris Stump, Jesse Smith, and Jack Smith, the top five.

Finally the fourth "Smackdown" rolled out as 2005 Rockford Speedway Late Model track champion, Ricky Bilderback delighted the hometown fans as well as the now five-time track champion would also lead all 20 laps to give the veteran from near-by Rockton, Illinois the heat race win. Landon Cassill picked up the runner-up spot over Nick Hammer, Mark Hartline, and J.D. Leonard completing the top five.

The four Provisional's from the 2005 ASALM Series Owners Points Standings went too Jason Dietsch, Doug True, Jason Miller, and Greg Nienhouse. Those four will start in positions 21st-24th. Taking the 25th and 26th starting spots in tomorrow's century grind based on being the two fastest cars from Motive Gear Qualifying that still weren't locked into the 100-lap feature were Mike Satkowiak and Chase Austin.

In light of losing two cars earlier in the evening, Bill Tomlinson due to a crash in Motive Gear Qualifying and Brett Piontek due to a crash in the fourth "Smackdown" Qualifier Heat race, ASA Late Model Series President, Ron Varney has decided to forgo the GM Performance Parts Shootout and add the remaining two cars, Steven Krunich and Mike Tetzlaff to the Chicago International Trucks 100. So in total, 28 cars will get the green flag for tomorrow's feature.

Tomorrow, Sunday afternoon, September 25th will be the fourth and final day of the 40th annual National Short Track Championships. After last chance races for the three remaining divisions, the CRA Super Series, Mid-American Stock Cars, and Mid-American Trucks, plus features for the two Mid-Am divisions, the Chicago International Trucks 100 will get the green flag at approximately 3:30pm.
