Joey Dennewitz wins first career feature, takes GM Performance Parts Shootout at IRP.
The cars and stars of the ASA Late Model Series Presented by GM Performance Parts had settled into the Indianapolis (IN) Raceway Park on Saturday July 30th for the A.S.I. Limited 100 Presented by Howe Racing Enterprises and Holloway Sportswear. It's also Lucas Oil Night at the Races at the world famous IRP oval.
After preliminary events for the companion USA Modifieds Series, it was time for the 25-lap GM Performance Parts Shootout and after all was said and done, Akron, Ohio freshman, and the oldest member of the "Young Lions of the ASA Late Model Series", 21-year-old Joey Dennewitz led all 25 laps to score his first career feature win.
Bill Tomlinson, the GM Performance Parts Shootout winner at Kalamazoo (MI) Speedway on July 1st and Dennewitz led the field to the green flag to begin the 25-lap sprint. Dennewitz took advantage of his outside front row starting spot to grab the lead away from Tomlinson while the rest of the field settled in behind the front row starters.
Only two cautions for harmless spins temporarily slowed down the action. Jason Tyler and Derek Bischak worked their way passed Tomlinson to grab second and third and both set their sights on Dennewitz. Bischak was able to get by Tyler late in the event and tried to make a late charge at Dennewitz. But Dennewitz had already built up an insurmountable lead and the Akron, Ohio driver would go on to score his first career series win.
Bischak, who recently celebrated his 17th birthday, would finish second ahead of Tyler, Tomlinson, Jim Ross, GM Performance Part Shootout Points leader Mark Hartline, Jeff Cave, Wally Carlson, Matt Minnifield, and Bob Varney would round out the top 10.
The A.S.I. Limited 100 Presented by Howe Racing Enterprises and Holloway Sportswear will roll out and get the green flag at the scheduled time of 9:15pm. Motive Gear Pole Award winner, Stephen Leicht drew a seven inversion, putting Jason Setser and Travis Dassow on the front row of the 26-car field! All times are Central Standard Time.
