The ASA Late Model Series Teams will be awarded 5 show-up points for the Calhoun County Speedway Rain Day. We had 38 of the 44 teams entered make an appearance at the track despite to questionable weather.
Although 5 points may not seem like much, it could make a difference to teams as we get our season underway and teams start earning provisional starts in events.
The rains came as a good thing for other teams that have been struggling to get their cars done to compete with the ASA LMS all season -- those teams are now only 1 event behind. This makes a huge difference since in the 2005 ASA LMS Season the series has implemented a points program that allows the competitor to throw out the 2 weakest events. So even those teams off to a slow start are still in the game, competing for the Championship is still a reality for everyone.
The series was fortunate to reschedule the date on July 2nd, the day after the Kalamazoo Speedway race. It will eliminate the cost of another travel date for teams and also allow the series to award the teams with a special Mid-Michigan Double Weekend Challenge Cup. The event at Kalamazoo Speedway which is scheduled for July 1st and the rescheduled "Snap-on 100" at Calhoun County on July 2nd are less than 60 minutes from each other.
"Jim Leisure at Calhoun County has always been great to work with. Jim looked at his schedule and made it happen for the series," stated Ron Varney. "Now all we have to do is really get into high gear and promote this Mid-Michigan Double Challenge Cup for the teams."
The Challenge Cup details will be released shortly, but it involves a guaranteed spot in the "Snap-on Tools 100" to the winner on July 1st at Kalamazoo Speedway. Sponsor participation will be a big part in the Challenge Cup awards and we hope many of our 40 plus sponsors will step-up and make this one of the biggest weekends in the 2005 ASA LMS Season.
The next ASA Late Model Series Event presented by GM Performance Parts is at Madison International Speedway on May 27th for the "Bryden Motors 100"
