Bob Varney: A busy slate includes a run at the 2005 ASA Late Model Series Championship.
To say that Bob Varney will be busy during the upcoming 2005 season for the ASA Late Model Series Presented by GM Performance Parts would be a drastic understatement. The Richmond, Michigan driver has a plethora of items on his to-do list for the 2005 racing season. Amongst those items he would love to check off that "honey do" list is the 2005 ASA Late Model series championship!
"We're going to run for the 2005 championship with the ASA Late Model Series Presented by GM Performance Parts." Said Bob Varney, matter of factly, when asked about his very full plate of activities planned for the upcoming season. "Despite all we have going on, we want to run for the championship, be competitive, win a race or two, and if all else fails, just be their at the end." Continued the 35-year-old pilot. "This is a special year for us and the Varney family. We are celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Varney family being involved in short track racing. My Grandpa built his first car in 1955, so it's definitely major motivation for all of us to do well this season and honor our family name."
Running the full season with the series is not the only thing Varney has on his plate, RV Performance is located in Richmond, Michigan and is owned by Varney. The company has been in business for over eight years and offers race teams plenty of options. RV Performance will once again be the Official ASA Late Model Series Presented by GM Performance Parts, Hoosier Tire Distributor for the series. The company has also been selected as the Official ASA Late Model Series Torco Racing Fuel Distributor for the 2005 season as well.
RV Performance is also an authorized ARP Body Dealer, an authorized Port City Racing Dealer and handles on-location product support at all ASA Late Model Series events for Detroit Locker, as well as Drive-Train Specialists (DTS) and does custom fabrication on race cars. Discounts will be offered to any registered ASA Late Model Series teams to include any of these services.
To further keep Bob Varney occupied are his three children: Tyler 14, Parker 10, and Brandon 3. His wife, Gretchen is expecting their fourth child, due in late July/early August.
As for his performance on the track, during the 2004 season in limited appearances on the ASA Late Model tour, Bob Varney registered one top 10 finish, which was a 10th at the Calhoun County (MI) Speedway. Varney is one of the original holdovers from the 2003 USPRO Cup Series days. The 10-year veteran forever holds the unique distinction of winning the first ever USPRO Cup series event, held at Thunder Valley (MI) Speedway and then the last ever event under the USPRO Cup banner, that same season at Tri-City (MI) Motor Speedway.
In that 2003 season, Varney recorded two wins as well as one pole at Spartan (MI) Speedway, where he still holds the track record for template body/crate engine machines. Four top fives and six top 10 finishes that season paved his way to a fourth place finish in the final points standings. Over his career, Varney has feature wins in the Limited Late Models division at Owosso (MI) Speedway and Tri-City MI, He nearly won the 1997 track championship at Tri-City, as despite his four feature wins that season, he lost the title by a mere two points to eventual champion, Jay Reinbold. Varney has also seen time at Auto City (MI) Speedway and Dixie (MI) Motor Speedway.
For the 2005 season, Varney will carry sponsorship on his Ford Taurus from RV Performance as well as M-D Enterprises, Finish Line Fabricating, and ARP Bodies.
