Williamson, NY - Jan Leaty battled a flat right rear tire during the late stages of the 51st Annual Sunoco Race of Champions but was able to salvage a fourth place finish in the October 13th spectacular. The Williamson, NY, veteran had previously powered his RoZap Enterprises sponsored Pontiac to third in the 200 lap modified feature event on the 5/8 mile oval at Oswego (NY) Speedway. The race was won George Kent, with Chuck Hossfeld second and Lee Sherwood third. With over 60 modified teams crowding the infield pits, only the top four finishers in each of the six qualifying heats earned feature starting spots. From his fifth starting position in the second heat, Leaty took the checkered in second, securing his spot in the show. The luck of the draw put his Troyer ninth on the starting grid for the feature. When the green flag flew, Leaty bided his time running in the top ten. After making his mandatory pit stop just about the halfway point, he started his charge to the front, working his way up from the fourteenth position. With only a handful of laps remaining, he was in third with his sights set on Kent and Hossfeld. The right rear tire then started to go flat, and Leaty held on to take the checkered in fourth. "All in all, the team had a good run, but I was a little disappointed," said Leaty. "This race has always been special to me, and it was at last year's race that I decided to return to racing. I would have liked to be in contention to win." The race was the season finale for Leaty and the Schum-Branich team. With a special thanks to the team's 2001 sponsors, plans are already in the works for an expanded schedule in 2002.
