CANAJOHARIE, NY - Just like his late idol Lou Lazzaro, David Lape, has lived for racing every Saturday night at Fonda (NY) Speedway. With his win on Saturday May 12 at Fonda, Lape, 54, has tied Lazzaro's record for the most winning seasons at the speedway at 30.
In 30 different seasons since 1961, Lazzaro was a winner at the famous half-mile egg shaped oval along the Mohawk River, known as "The Track of Champions". Heading into this season, his 38th year of competition at Fonda, Lape had victories in 29 different seasons. His first career win ironically came over Lazzaro way back in 1969 at Fonda, where he once used to sit in the stands as a child as a Lazzaro fan. Ever since then, Lape has gone through great success at his beloved speedway, scoring 90 career feature wins and five track championships (83, 86, 87, 91, 92).
This season, David, who was voted by the fans last year as the Program Dynamics Most Popular Modified driver at Fonda, has been behind the wheel of a brand new Burrows Motorsports 2001 TEO Pro Car, with a strong updated Boyd motor. After several disappointing runs, Lape finally found victory lane on May 12, his 91st career victory, which marks his 30th season of winning at Fonda. In addition, he is the only driver to have won races in five different decades at the speedway. Only Lazzaro (113) wins and last Saturday's feature winner Jack Johnson (137 wins) are ahead of Lape on the all-time Fonda win list.
In Fonda's famous Victory Square on May 12, painted in the colors of the legendary Harry Peek and Lou Lazzaro, the Lape family watched as David's nearly nine year old daughter, Jessica, did a spectacular roof dance on the No. 22. It is because of his wife Jackie and daughter Jessica, that Lape still enjoys racing, and winning at the speedway he has called his home for nearly 40 years.
With the Fonda flame of history burning brightly on the side of the No. 22, David is quick to recognize that if it were not for sponsorship and the support of many valued friends and family members, he would not be able to continue racing at such a competitive level and even return to victory lane.
Sponsors of the team for the 2001 season at Fonda include Fred Burrows Trucking & Excavating of Whitesboro along with Canajoharie area businesses Central National Bank, M.W. Roosevelt's and Sons Chevy-Olds, and W.W. Custom Clad. Other sponsors include A&B Speed Equipment in Johnstown, Buanno's Body Shop in Gloversville, and Prime Signs in Fonda.
When this summer will ageless veteran David Lape bring the house down at Fonda once again, and visit victory lane for the 92nd time of his distinguished career? It all happens every Saturday night at Fonda Speedway.
