Pendleton, IN (April 9, 2002) -- After a three-year absence, the ASA Racing Series roars into Lanier National Speedway on Saturday, April 26 for a 250-lap showdown. This is the second visit to the Georgia racetrack for the series known to build champions and the only race in the Peach State during the 36th season of championship stock car racing.
In ASA's inaugural event at Lanier in April of 2000, Wisconsin's Scott Wimmer captured the biggest victory in his stock car racing career, winning the Discount Auto Parts 300. After failing to earn a starting position in the season-opening event at USA International Speedway, Wimmer dominated the final 122 laps of the initial event at Lanier.
Wimmer started 12th in the 34-car field and advanced among the top 10 at the start. At the 100-lap mark, Wimmer made his only pit stop, picking up two fresh BFGoodrich Traction T/A Radials.
At lap 175, Wimmer advanced to the third spot, behind 1999 ASA National Champion Tim Sauter and series veteran Mike Miller. With 122 circuits remaining, Miller and Sauter were battling for the top spot when Wimmer powered around both of them to take first position. Miller held on for runner-up honors with three-time ASA National Champion Butch Miller, Scott Hansen and two-time ASA National Champion Gary St. Amant rounding out the top-five finishers.
"This is unbelievable," said Wimmer following the victory. "I've followed ASA Racing all my life and dreamed about this; this is a dream come true. I was worried about the last yellow, but the car got better and better all night. We were going to pit twice, but found we didn't need to."
