Lakeland, FL Mike Garvey posted fast time Friday night at the USA International Speedway as the USAR Hooters Cup cars prepare for Saturday’s Hooterade 200. Garvey piloted his Coors Silver Bullet Chevrolet around the ¾ mile facility in 20.722 seconds to lead Dwayne Dempsey, Tony Walls, Freddie Query and Rookie of the Year contender Scott Wimmer as the top five. Many outstanding names in the 53 car field failed to make the top twenty cut including 1995 Hooters Cup champion Mario Gosselin, Mardy Lindley, Dick Anderson and Jody Ridley. Scott Wimmer led the rookie charge as Harold Fair Jr. and Ronnie Burkett completed the list of rookies to qualify. The USAR/SARA Modifieds ran Friday night following Hooters Cup qualifying and Jerry Symons led the final 6 laps to win the 50 lap contest. Jim Childers started from the outside of the first row and led the charge to turn one. Childers led 44 circuits holding off a charging Symons. The race was red flagged briefly for a turn one accident involving Rob Partelo and Randy Burch. Burch was uninjured however his race car required the use of a rollback to remove it from the speedway surface. Partelo was able to drive away and eventually finish fifth. Rounding out the top five finishers were Barry Willoughby, Dwayne Dempsey, Billy Mowery and Partelo. The Southern Pro Trucks made their debut at USA Friday with Randy Smathers taking the win over Dave McCabe, Brian Teeters, Wayne Metcalf and Jimmy Carter. This new series will run 20 events around the Central Florida area during the 1997 season. Second round qualifying begins Saturday afternoon at 12:30 to complete the 40 car starting field for the Hooters Cup lineup. Qualifying for the USAR Jackaroo Pro-Cup and the USAR Sportsman cars will follow the Hooters Cup qualifying runs and the Hooterade 200 takes the green flag at 4 PM. Sunday’s Jackaroo Pro-Cup 250 gets underway at 2 PM and the Sportsman 100 at 4 PM.
