(West Salem, WI) Mike Eddy made a triumphant return to the American Speed Association Sunday afternoon, pulling off a surprise win in the VIP Warehouse ACDelco DuraStop 300 presented by Jani-King at La Crosse Fairgrounds Speedway.

Eddy pulled to the inside of local favorite Tim Sauter with three laps remaining, regained the lead on lap 298, and then beat Sauter to the checkers by .521 second to record the 57th victory of his ASA ACDelco Challenge Series career in his first appearanc e in 1999.

ASA pole qualifying was rained out Saturday afternoon, resulting in the starting lineup being determined by current ACDelco Challenge Series point standings. Eddy, who had not competed all season, was forced to start 32nd in the 36-car field.

Eddy wasted little time in making his way to the front, advancing to ninth position by lap 50, and to fifth by lap 125.

The former 7-time ASA national champion then used some of the veteran savvy that has made him the touring circuit's second-winningest all-time competitor. He took advantage of two mid-race caution periods to take on four new Goodyear Eagle tires, stopping for the last time on lap 156.

When the leaders pitted on lap 197, Eddy remained on the track, assuming the lead. He remained in front until lap 274, when Sauter was able to slip past the venerable Eddy for what appeared to be the winning move. Eddy stayed glued to Sauter's rear bumper , and when the 11th and final caution flag flew on lap 294, Eddy had one last chance to write the final chapter in a potential story-book return.

Sauter finished 2nd, followed by Jimmie Johnson in third. Johnson's 3rd-place finish eliminated his chances to collect the $50,000 Jani-King Triple Crown Challenge Series bonus, offered to any driver who could win three select events, including the ASA sto p at La Crosse. Both Eddy and Johnson will be eligible for a $10,000 bonus if either can win the final event of the $50,000 Jani-King Triple Crown Challenge at Jennerstown Speedway in Pennsylvania on September 12.

The American Speed Association returns to action at Berlin Raceway in Marne, MI, on Saturday night, August 14, with the Build-A-Mold 300 at 7:00 p.m. (Eastern). The Build-A-Mold 300 will be televised live on FOX Sports Network.
