ASA Race #1 April 6, 1997 Southern National Speedway; Kenly, NC "Tar heel 400"

Finished: 21st Running, 346 laps complete Stated: 20th, 97.764 mph

The JR Automation/Lane Automotive team with driver Bob Senneker has set its sights firmly on the 1997 ASA Championship. The season's first event had the Ford Thunderbird one of the quickest in practice before qualifying, but when it was time for Bob to qualify the best he could do was 20th quick. In the final practice session he was one of the quickest again, so there was no reason to be worried about the 400 lap event. With the 20th starting spot that assured the Senneker Motorsports team they would be pitting on the front stretch at Kenly, as there were only 20 spots available. With 400 laps to go, Bob knew he would take his time getting to the front, at the green flag the field roared off and as a crash happened on the 2nd lap, Bob dodged the mess and was running 15th. By lap 41 he was up to 12th, complaining that the car was loose and needed to be tightened up. Bob got as high as 11th before fading back to 14th, when the 4th cauton flew at lap 90. Bob pitted for fresh right side rubber and fuel, the crew made a great stop with a time of 13.9 seconds beating a bunch of other teams out of the pits. When the race resumed he was running 8th, he gotr as high as 7th, then as the car got loose he began to fade, when the 5th caution waved at the 138 lap mark, he pitted for left side tires and fuel then went back on the track running 11th. The next stretch of green flag saw the track get extremely "greasy" as many car were put a lap down by the leaders on the tight 3/8 mile track. Bob was lapped by the then leader jack Landis at lap 202, Bob then moved up the track where it was cleaner and started running the high groove gaining back on the leader, running so high in fact he brushed the backstretch wall; as he was pressuring Landis to get his lap back, Bob slowed upruptly on the backstrectch with a fuel pick-up problem. The crew diagnosed that the fuel pump had broke, they lost many laps in the pits repairing the wounded "Bluebird", with the reapirs made he returned to the track 54 laps down. "The car was lose there at the beginning and as we were chasing it we got lapped. Once I moved up to the high side the leader we were really flying", said Senneker. "But then it broke. Were here to win the Championship, so we fixed it and went back out to gain some more points". The next ASA race will be April 20 at Peach State Speedway in Georgia with the race televised at 1pm on TNN.
