Kawartha Speedway Racing closes down for 2003 due to noise ordinance; ISMA-Lucas Oil Super Series loses May 23 and July 11 shows there.
Oswego, NY The rumor was out there last weekend, but now it's fact. Kawartha Speedway, near Peterborough, Ontario, Canada, has been closed down as far as auto racing goes. Apparently the local town officials have passed a noise ordinance that the speedway could not comply with. The ISMA-Lucas Oil Super Series had two shows scheduled, which now are cancelled. The dates for those two shows were May 23rd and July 11th.
Said ISMA president Chuck Handley on Monday, May 12, "We are very sorry to lose these two shows at Kawartha. The officials there have informed us that if anything changes they will notify us immediately. But, for now, we have to look to other options to make up for that loss in the 2003 schedule."
Kawartha was the only auto racing facility closed down by the ordinance. Kawartha, with a horse track and a casino to fall back on, has pretty much given up the fight.
Peterborough Speedway, which has been running since 1967, is grandfathered in as to the ordinance. They have run 3 shows already in 2003 and will continue as planned with their schedule.
Said a Peterborough spokesman, John Paul, "Our track is not affected by the recently passed law, but Kawartha is because they are relatively new. We are three shows into our season and have a full slate of racing planned. Please let everyone know that were are running. We are already getting phone calls."

Further information, should it arise, will be announced immediately. The next ISMA show now is at Oswego Speedway on Saturday, May 24 when the Jim Shampine Memorial Twin 50's for winged and non-winged supers takes place.
