Saturday, April 16th - Week #2 -- Mother Nature once again blessed us all with a perfect night of weather, producing some great short track racing, Kalamazoo Style. Another good crowd was on hand and the pits were crowded with some great looking cars. Before the racing action got started, the winners of the Best Looking Car Contest, that was held at the car show, was presented on the front stretch. Brad Shellenbarger won in the Pure Stock Class and Todd Foote had the best looking Sport Stock. Mickey Cornwell won the honors in the Limited Lates, and Dave Lober and Jeff Ganus tied for the best looking Super Late. The overall winner for 2005 was Mickey Cornwell, as the applause from the crowd confirmed the overall decision.
Curt Spalding took home the 50 lap Super Late trophy, in a very popular victory. The next two positions were the rookie sensations of Steve Needles and Jerry Drake, followed by Phil Bozell and Joe Bush.
Brandon Lyons made it 2 in a row, as he dominated the Limited Late A Main. Another pair of rookies took the next two positions, as Kyle VanSparrentak was a close second, followed by Jon Orr. They were followed by Rich Hardy and Brian Bergakker.
The Sport Stock A Feature was won by Courtney Weston, as he was followed to the stripe by Trent Hellinga, John Termeer, Todd Foote, and Ben Raber.
The action in the Pure Stocks continue to be wild, as Kevin Shannon took home the top prize. Greg Haynes had a good run for second, followed by Bob Livingston, Mark Fliearman, and rookie Jake Caines. Scroll to the bottom of the page for "Waynes Wrap-up!"
Don't forget about Autograph Night this Saturday, April 23rd. All of the cars will be on the track by 6:00 for the autograph/photo session. All gate and practice times will begin 1 hour earlier, so get out to Kalamazoo Speedway early, and don't forget your cameras.
Curt Spalding from Hartford, MI displayed a dominating performance in capturing his 1st ever Super Late Model feature win Saturday night at Kalamazoo Speedway. Spalding started in the 4th position in the Russell Racing #40 and quickly worked his way into the top spot. The 2nd and 3rd place finishing positions were captured by Super Late Model rookies Steve Needles and Jerry Drake. Phil Bozell wound up 4th and Joe Bush 5th. Completing the top 10 were Andy Bozell, Hank Miller, Lee Anderson, Rick Sexton and Chris Orr. Last Chance winner Jeff Vochaska exited early in the main event backing into the 1st turn wall. Shawn McLaughlin was also an early DNF with engine problems. Heat winners were Sexton, Bush and Spalding. Brandon Lyons took advantage of the #1 starting draw and went on to capture his 2nd consecutive Limited Late Model 35 lap feature win. LLM rookie Kyle VanSparrentak was 2nd followed by Jon Orr, Rich Hardy and Brian Bergakker. 6-10 were Luke Krick, Mike Brooks, Jim Hunderman, Rick VanHouten and Matt Krywosinski. Heat wins went to Jacob Hopwood, Michelle Sexton and Lyons. Courtney Weston survived a close call with Ben Raber in turn 4 and led all the way in capturing the 25 lap Sport Stock main. Raber came back after going to the rear of the field to finish 5th. Racing action was frantic in the waning laps as the 2nd thru 5th positions were continuously swapped. Trent Hellenga finished in the runner-up spot with John TerMeer 3rd and Todd Foote 4th. 6th was Steve Casterline with BJ Orr, Joe Reaume, Del Heckelman and Cory Kruzel completing the top 10. Lawton, MI''s Kevin Shannon was victorious in capturing his 1st ever Pure Stock 20 lap feature win. Greg Haynes was 2nd with heat winner Bob Livingston 3rd, Mark Fliearman 4th and Jacob Caines 5th. Filling out the top 10 were Frank Abraham, Brad Shellenbarger, Jimmy Wheaton, Harold Lock and Andy Bozell, Jr. Heat winners were Livingston and Shellenbarger. Coming up this Saturday, April 23 will be Autograph Night and Student Night. Students 17 and under just have to show student I.D. to get in for just $2. It will also be Hoosier Night as anyone from the state of Indiana just have to show their Driver''s License to get in for free. Also, any KOHA youth hockey player in uniform will also be admitted free. Remember to bring your cameras as all the cars will be on the speedway at 6:00 for autographs. Racing at 7:00!
