Irwindale, CA (April 6, 2002) -- When you're hot, you're hot, and Joey Clanton of Stockbridge (GA) picked right up where he left off two weeks ago in ASA's season opener in Florida. There, Clanton won the 200-lap event and now, at Irwindale Speedway's .50-m ile oval, the third-year ASA veteran has claimed the pole for Sunday's TireRack.com 300 presented by BFGoodrich Tires.
Posting progressively faster times throughout the afternoon practice sessions, Clanton managed one of only two qualifying laps under the 18-seconds mark. His 17.949 secs./100.284 mph topped Gary St. Amant's time of 17.984 secs./100.078 mph lap.
It marks the third pole of Clanton's ASA career, totaling 42 outings. "We felt the track was kinda loose today," said Clanton, ASA's 2000 Rookie of the Year. "Some of the guys may have not given the track enough respect as the corners are sweeping. Our car was adaptable all day and I drove it hard. My team from (crew chief) Bond Suss throughout is really prepared."
St. Amant was the pole-sitter at Lakeland (FL) two weeks ago and followed that with another strong qualifying effort. He is the defending race winner for ASA at Irwindale. Kevin Cywinski of Wisconsin qualified third, with Greg Stewart of North Carolina and Mike Cope of Florida rounding out the top five.
Brandon Miller of Bakersfield was the highest qualifying home-state California driver. He makes his third career ASA start from the 11th position. Jake Hodges of Simi Valley starts 27th as the other Golden State starter prepares to battle for the $268,810 purse.
The TireRack.com 300 presented by BFGoodrich Tires is the second of 20 events in the 2002 ASA Racing Series season. Gates open at 10 a.m. Sunday morning, with the on-track fan autograph session set to begin at 11 a.m. The green flag flies just after 1:00 p .m. (Pacific). The event will be telecast live on TNN (The National Network).
