Pendleton, Ind. (July 17, 2002) -- Current Sunoco Super Series points leader Joel Kauffman of LaGrange (IN) makes his debut on July 20, with the ASA Racing Series in the Tecumseh 300 at Salem Speedway. Kauffman drives the number 40 LA West Luxury Vehi cles car. The 16-year-old is under the guidance of ASA veteran Scott Hansen of Green Bay, Wis. Hansen, a former winner at Salem Speedway with ASA, is the crew chief and driving coach for Kauffman's ASA effort.
"I am really excited about making my ASA debut at Salem Speedway," said Kauffman. "Salem has always been one of my favorite tracks to race at, and with Scott Hansen's guidance I am confident we will have a great race! We can run the same lap times on 10 lap tires as 60 lap tires and that should be a big advantage for us. We want to qualify in the top ten and finish all the laps."
Team LA Motorsports had a very successful test last Wednesday at Salem Speedway, after a rough start on Monday.
"I have been amazed how consistent Joel has been in the ASA car on the BFGoodrich Radial Tires," commented Scott Hansen. "Joel spun out and hit the wall on Monday early into our scheduled test. We took the car back to the shop, fixed it a nd came back on Wednesday. Joel went right out and started making good runs with all the confidence in the world. I don't want to make him overconfident, but I feel he is already a legitimate top-five finisher and could be a contender to win!"
Kauffman will be making two appearances Friday night at the Washington County Fair in Salem, Indiana in conjunction with the running of the Tecumseh 300. In an effort to help build awareness for the fight against cancer, Kauffman will be signing autographs and visiting with fans at the American Cancer Society Relay For Life booth from 7 to 8 p.m. Kauffman will then make an appearance at the Eddie Gilstrap Motors tent from 8 to 9 p.m.
Kauffman is competing full-time with the Sunoco Super Series in 2002 and is the current points leader after 10 of 19 races. He was that series Rookie of The Year, finishing sixth in points last season. Kauffman became the youngest winner in Sunoco Super Se ries history this year by winning a 100-lap event on May 26th at Toledo Speedway. He followed that up with another win on June 8th at Anderson (IN) Speedway.
Kauffman will compete in two additional ASA Racing Series events in 2002, August 11th at Toledo Speedway and October 6 at Winchester (IN) Speedway.
