Oswego, NY - After a month's respite, the ISMA supers are gearing up for the first of two visits in 2001 north of the border. The first stop is a new venue, Kawartha Speedway on Friday, July 6, with Cayuga Speedway, the second leg of the journey on Saturday, July 7. Lou Cicconi leads the ISMA points as the contingent heads into international waters, trailed closely by Chris Perley, Joe Gosek, Dave McKnight, with Joey Payne and Russ Wood tied for fifth in the standings.
Kawartha Speedway, located just southwest of Peterborough, Ontario, is a fast 3/8 mile semi-banked oval, just right for the powerful winged supers. The program for the July 6 event includes heats, a consi and a 75 lap main. Pit gates open at 3:00 pm with warmups at 4:30. The first heat will be flagged off at 7:30 pm. Camping is allowed on the grounds and if arriving on Thursday night, there is also harness racing and 375 slot machines on site, for an unusual combination at an auto race track.
Kawartha may be reached by crossing into Canada via the Thousand Islands' bridge. Take Rt. 401 west to exit 464, Highway 28. Karwartha is on the left, 12 miles from the exit.
More information on Kawartha may be obtained by calling 705-939-6316 or go to www.kawarthadowns.com on the web.
After Friday night's activities, the ISMA boys pack up and head down the 401 west to Rt. 427. Going 2.5 miles to the QEW, where the racers and and head to Hamilton, exit 88. Take Rt. 20, Centennial Parkway south. This road turns into Rt. 56 and will end on Rt. 3. Cayuga 2000 Speedway is 5 miles down Rt. 3 on the right. Cayuga is approximately 140 miles from Kawartha.
Pit gates open for the Cayuga show at 12 noon, with grandstands opening at 3:00 pm. Warmups for the supers begin at 3:00 pm with racing starting promptly at 5:00 pm. The main event at the Brad Lichty-Garry Evans owned 5/8 mile oval is a 50 lapper, the first of two to be run there this season. An ISMA party follows at the Speedway Pavilion with free admission. There is a fee to camp at Cayuga and more info may be obtained by calling 905-768-1177.
Everyone is reminded that cards of cheer may be sent to Davey Hamilton, a friend of many ISMA and Oswego Speedway fans and competitors alike, in care of Methodist Hospital, 1701 North Senate, Indianapolis, IN 46202. Davey still faces months of surgery and rehabilitation after his devastating crash.
