Irwindale, Calif. - - (January 17, 2001) An early 2001 racing season start, and a spectacular one, is part of the 37-event schedule about to be released by Irwindale Speedway.

Kicking off the first season of the 21st Century, will be an American Speed Association (ASA) event on Saturday, March 10. Marking the ASA's first ever visit to the West Coast, the affair will showcase the exciting short track stock car series' best in a 300-lap race on the track that has a reputation for engendering close, competitive wire-to-wire racing. "Having ASA choose Irwindale as the first track West of the Rockies that they would bring their show to is really an honor," said Speedway VP/COO Bob DeFazio. "Ever since this event was announced late last year, the response by the fans has been amazing. It seems that they just can't wait."

With that ASA show jump-starting the competition year, Irwindale's schedule shifts into gear early and stays in high gear until Thanksgiving Night, November 22 when the 61st running of the classic "Thanksgiving - USAC Turkey Night Grand Prix" will pit the finest open wheel talent in the country against each other for 100 laps. With a list of winners that includes the likes of A.J. Foyt, Parnelli Jones, Stan Fox, Tony Stewart, Mel Kenyon, Jason Leffler, Kevin Olson, and Ronnie Shuman, "Turkey Night" ranks as one of the sport's premier annual events.

Between opening day an closing night there will be 19 Super Late Model races, 18 Late Model Races, 16 Super Stock races, 14 Grand American Modified races, and 12 Modified 4's (nee "Mini-Stock") races, all on the NASCAR Weekly Racing Series card. Fans flock to see these familiar drivers, local stars of many years standing and new, young drivers on their way to top professional careers, all racing on the Irwindale oval.

Three (televised) NASCAR Winston West Championship races and three NASCAR Featherlite Southwest Tour Championship races will, as last year, be "on tap" for fans at Irwindale.

And, the USAC Coors Light Silver Bullet "big cars" will invade Irwindale early in the 2001 season with a double booking on Saturday night March 24 with the agile USAC Western States Sprint Cars. Open wheel racing at Irwindale is always guaranteed to raise the hairs on the back of your neck.

The very popular Star Mazda Series open wheel formula cars will make a call on Irwindale on June 9. Add in regular visits from the popular Legend Cars, the American Race Trucks, the MSRA Pro4 Modifieds, The Ultra Wheels Super Trucks, and the Mechanix Wear Speed Trucks, and you've got a jam-packed hot season of super Saturday nights.

Tickets for all events are on sale at the Speedway box office, by phone at (626) 358-1100, and on the "web" at www.tickets.com.
