Indianapolis, Ind. - Temperatures were frigid but Memphis, Indiana's Dale Shelton was too hot to handle at the Indianapolis Speedrome's Carmel Sod Spring Fling.
The 35 lap feature was a tight battle between some of Figure-8 racing's toughest warriors. Shelton started back in the pack but quickly busted through to run second behind Anderson, Indiana's Mike Riddle with Louisville, Kentucky's Artie B. Ware third. Riddle, Shelton and Ware traded paint through the mid-part of the race until traffic brushed Riddle back to a third place finish behind Ware and Shelton. Indy's Rob Collins and Billy Boyer rounded out the top five with a great run from rookie Bobby Russell for sixth.
Shelton's Country Style Plaza Thunderbird had sat on fast time during qualifying only to be bumped by the Ware's PayDay's of Shively Special. Riddle claimed the Trophy Dash in his Conklin's Power Tunes ride. Heat wins went to Jack Smith and Mark Daily, Speedrome regulars. The Speedrome's bump-and-grind Sunshine Café Roadrunner division featured an exciting side-by-side battle between Scott Cothron's Team Green machine and the J.D. Byrider-sponsored Bill Fortner with Cothron just winning the "A" Main at the line. John Conklin took the "B" Main in his T-H Auto Sales Cutlass. Heats went to Jesse Cothron, Shawn Kloss, and Keith Taylor.
Round 2 of the Carmel Sod Spring Fling continues Sunday, March 11, 2001 at Indy's eastside track.
