An emotional moment at the Indianapolis Speedrome as Joe Thurman claimed his first career feature in Friday's Carmel Sod Modifieds 50-lapper. Thurman survived a run that included a flip by flat-track rookie Porter Bennett and mangled steel all through the field. Thurman led wire-to-wire with fellow rookie Rob McAllister, Sr. hot on his tail and challenging at every lap.
The championship battle continues to tighten as points leader Billy George had to dive into the pits to repair damage and finished 7th, Jim Begley suffered a flat tire later in the race with no chance to pit and dropped out in 14th position. Earlier in the evening Doug Greig, third in the Modified points, suffered a possible broken arm while working on his Legend Car. Greig ran the Modified main finishing 6th. Boyer recovered from his set back to grab 5th. The current Top 4 with 2 races remaining are: Billy George - 1417 points; Billy Boyer - 1388; Doug Greig - 1387 and Jim Begley - 1378.
Greig, still in pain and with a broken arm soldiered from the tail of the 35-lap Race City Auto Sales Legend Car feature to second place, clinching the season championship. Rodney Smith won the go after chasing down Eric Black. Tony Sanders triumphed in the Bandolero part of the show and Ken Casto returned to win the Yardarm Bomber Figure-8.
The Sunshine Cafe Roadrunners were a relatively calm affair with wins going to Steve Barton and newcomer Kenny McRee.
The Chuck's Race Car Parts Stocks ran a pair of 25-lap qualifying races in preparation for Saturday's 5th Annual Kenny's Auto Sales 50. Wins went to Gregory Jines and Don Miller.
