SUSSEX, Wisc. - Westport Night of Thunder, a motorsports festival in the Kansas City, Mo. area, was held in conjunction with the ASA ACDelco Series race at I-70 Speedway on Thursday, June 22. Price Chopper, a local grocery chain, sponsored a pit stop contest for several of the visiting ASA teams.
The timed event required drivers to drive into their pit stall, change the two right side tires and dump a simulated can of fuel into the vehicle. After service was complete, drivers had to drive out of the stall to stop the clock. ASA Series Officials oversaw the event and were in charge of establishing the rules and assessing penalties.
Of the nine teams competing, the Herzog Motorsports teams of Ricky Johnson and Mark Dismore finished second and third in the competition, respectively. Johnson's No. 22 Nationwide Auction Systems/WorldBestBuy.com team, led by crew chief Paul "Rollie" Christman, whipped off a time of 15.709 seconds.
The No. 44 Monster.com/WorldBestBuy.com team, guided by veteran crew chief Howie Lettow, completed their stop with a time of 14.471. The time was good enough to capture the victory, but they were later assessed a two-second penalty for one loose lug nut, bumping them to third.
Johnson's team took home $1,500 for their second place effort, while Dismore's team was given $1,000 for third place.
"Our teams did a great job," co-owner Randy Herzog said. "We should've been first and third, but we had a small problem on Mark's stop. Even with the penalty, the 44 team still managed to finish with the third fastest time. These guys practice hard to be the best in the pits and it shows. I'm very proud of both teams."
Herzog Motorsports is a successful, championship-winning race team. Based in Los Angeles, Calif.; St. Joseph, Mo.; Charlotte, N.C.; and Milwaukee, Wisc., Herzog Motorsports fields two teams in the 2000 ASA ACDelco Series with backing from Nationwide Auction Systems, Monster.com, and WorldBestBuy.com.
The No. 22 Nationwide Auction Systems/WorldBestBuy.com team and the No. 44 Monster.com/WorldBestBuy.com team have a couple weeks to prepare before heading to the new Chicago Motor Speedway on July 16. The USAMeats.com 200 begins at 3 p.m. EST and will be broadcast live on TNN Sports.
