ASA roars into Hawkeye Downs on May 24
Pendleton, Ind. (May 1, 2003) -- For the ninth consecutive season, the ASA Racing Series visits the .50-mile Hawkeye Downs Speedway in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The Iowa 300 on Saturday, May 24, is the only 2003 visit to the Hawkeye State for the series that is known to build champions.
Two-time series champion Gary St. Amant won an old-fashioned, 25-lap shoot-out at Hawkeye Downs Speedway in September of 2002, picking up valuable championship points on Joey Clanton, who crashed on the final lap of the event. The victory was the second consecutive for the Ohio competitor and the 19th of his career.
Clanton took the lead on the 252nd circuit following a competition yellow pit stop after 100 green laps of racing. Mike Garvey followed Clanton with Kevin Cywinski and St. Amant rounding out the top five. The No. 7 ACDelco Chevrolet of St. Amant climbed to second and on the lap 278 restart got right behind Clanton entering turn 3.
The race leader slipped in the corner, which allowed St. Amant to move to the inside and the two touched, pushing Clanton into the second groove. The eighth and final caution flag waved on lap 290 when Landry Potter hit the Styrofoam barriers in turn 3, which set up a five-lap dash to the checkers. St. Amant opened a lead on the restart while Clanton, Cywinski and Garvey battled for position.
As they raced to the white flag, Clanton got high coming off of turn 4 and Cywinski got to the inside, entering turn one the two made contact sending Clanton into the wall, resulting in a seventh-place finish. At the stripe, it was St. Amant winning by 1.87 seconds followed by Cywinski, Garvey, Robbie Pyle and Steve Carlson.
"We were the only lead lap car to change left sides," St. Amant said after collecting the victory. "Everybody else only changed right sides and those fresher tires made the difference. The crew gave me an awesome car after the final pit stop," added St. Amant.
