BEAVER DAM, Wis. (Wednesday) Billy Moyer won a wild one at Beaver Dam Raceway.

In an unpredictable scramble at the end of the Governor's Cup 100, Bill Frye was disqualified after a lap-95 tangle with Donnie Moran, who had rocketed into the lead with five laps remaining. The disqualification handed Moyer, the Hav-A-Tampa points leader, his eighth series win of the year and $10,600 in the second-to-last race on the Mason-Dixon Summer Tour.

Frye, who was placed last in the finishing order by Hav-A-Tampa officials for rough driving, had won the previous night's race at LaSalle, Ill. Frye was leading again at Beaver Dam, but his lead began to wane by lap 90.

Moyer and Moran, working different lines on the 3/8-mile oval, moved into striking position with 10 laps to go. Moran made a last-gasp charge and passed Moyer for second on the 93rd lap, then drove deep into Turn 3 and cleared Frye on the front stretch for the lead on lap 94.

Moran's slashing runs out of Turn 2 allowed him to outrun Moyer and Frye on the back stretch, while Freddy Smith and Skip Arp mounted their own charges from the fourth and fifth positions. With Moyer still in third behind Frye, Moran guided the leading trio through Turns 3 and 4 heading to the line on lap 95 when Frye drove the Moran mount into a spin exiting Turn 4.

Moyer darted around Moran, whose car performed a 360-degree spin before righting itself to maintain third position. Frye was scored as the leader on the 95th lap and Moyer challenged for what appeared to be a race for the $10,000 winner's purse. However, Frye's car wasn't scored the final four laps by series officials.

Remarkably, Moran recovered and crossed the finish line just behind Moyer and Frye. Moran was officially scored as the second-place finisher, while Freddy Smith, Arp and Steve Francis rounded out the top five. Rick Aukland, Gary Webb, Wendell Wallace, Russ Scheffler and Clint Smith finished sixth through 10th.
