Speedo the Clown and exciting racing action at the Hardeeville Motor Speedway.
HARDEEVILLE, S.C. (May 4, 2002) - Speedo the Clown entertained both race fans young and old alike Saturday night as The Beasley Agency sponsored an exciting night of racing at the Hardeeville Motor Speedway. Corey Fletcher of Bloomingdale, GA became the third different Late Model winner in three races in 2002 at HMS. Craig Goess, Jr. of Greenville, NC picked up the Legends Cars feature event. Johnny Brown of Bluffton, SC won the Mini Stock race and Don Dean of Sheldon, SC topped the Xtreme Stock Car field.
Racing action began quick and with fury as the Legends B-Main feature opened with another night of first lap caution flags as several cars got into it in turn one. The B-Main sent its top 6 finishers into the A-Main feature as Hardeeville's Billy Tysinger took the checker flag. The 40 lap A-Main Legends feature was truly exciting from flag to flag with Craig Goess, Jr. form Greenville, NC coming across to take the checkered flag holding off young Andrew Smith of Savannah, GA finishing second for the second week in a row. Kevin O'Brien of Beaufort, SC finished third having a rear view mirror full of the fourth place finisher Jimmy Lang of Bluffton, SC. The Pro division points leader, Garrett Shurling of Ellabell, GA walked away from a vicious crash in turn two. Lady Legends action was back again for a 10 Lap shootout as Laura Mackenzie of Hardeeville, SC bested Cindy Reyburn of Goose Creek, SC.
The ever-exciting Mini Stock division saw some very heated battles but in the end Johnny Brown of Bluffton, SC was victorious besting a great run from John Carlen of N. Charleston, SC. David Carr, Jr. of Martinez, GA finished third. Stephen Moore of St. George, SC was the strongest competitor for Brown all night until a late race incident sent Moore to the rear of the field at the restart. Moore finished fifth behind Randy Day of Beaufort, SC. In the Xtreme Stock car feature, Sheldon, SC native Don Dean took the lead on lap 10 and held off Scott Thorne of Hardeeville, SC for the victory.
The O.C. Welch Ford-Lincoln-Mercury Late Models had a 30-lap race and Corey Fletcher of Bloomingdale, GA came on at lap 27 and held on for the victory. The first 26 laps were led by Tom Haidon of Hilton Head, SC but after an altercation with Shane Jenkins of Statesboro, GA, Haidon was sent back to the rear. The race was red flagged for about 10 minutes as track officials cleaned up after a fiery crash from the car of Corey Hendrix of Statesboro, GA. Hendrix was checked out and released from the hospital late Saturday night.
