Greg Edwards Finishes 2nd at Langley Speedway
With weather conditions not so favorable on Race Night, the Track Management and Staff did an awesome job to keep moving forward! The rain was coming in sporadically but the staff was staying on top of tracking the storm and kept a positive attitude to make it all come together. Their determination and hard work paid off and the race was still on!
It was great to see all of the folks from Tysinger wearing their "Greg Edwards T-shirts". What a great display of support! Tysinger designed these specialty shirts and they are making them available to everyone. So, stop by Tysinger Dodge (2712 Magruder Blvd., Hampton) to pick up your t-shirt! While you're there, ask Tysinger about the "special" pricing they are now offering to anyone who mentions Langley Speedway.
The Speedway race fans continued to stay through the rain and re-entered the stands as the track staff and volunteers continued to dry the track. Tysinger Dodge's Joe Connors and Tommy Griffith from FM99's "Tommy and Rumble Morning Show" joined the volunteers by taking two of Tysinger's Dodge trucks to the track to help with the drying.
Greg qualified in 2nd position and on the "re-draw" he started 7th. Tommy Griffith dropped the Green Flag to start the 75-Lap Race. The first lap was not even completed when there was an accident involving eight cars in the third turn. Without the completed first lap, there was a re-start where Greg then started 5th.
The Score Board was not working so it became very challenging for Greg's crew and "spotter" Brett Huggett to not only keep up with everything going on with the cars on the track but now they were also keeping a manual count of laps. Thank you to Edwards Family Friend and Edwards Motorsports Sponsor -- Bruce Fair of Tom's Snacks Fair Distributing for keeping score of "manual laps" for us and working with the team's spotters so the driver's knew what lap they were on during the race.
By lap 25, Greg had moved up to 4th. Just after pushing to the 4th position, Greg started to notice a vibration in the left rear tire. Not knowing what was causing the vibration, Greg continued to charge forward to gain positions and try for the lead. Only half way to go and Greg moves to 3rd. On the 45th lap Greg makes a pass to take 2nd and charged towards his brother Danny who was in the lead.
During his attempt to try to take lead, the vibration from the rear tire became too strong to continue to push. Greg made the decision to stay on the track and try to hold his position just to finish the last few laps of the race. Greg took 2nd Place and joined his brother Danny (who took 1st Place) in "Dale Lemmons Victory Lane".
After the race, Greg's car was taken to the Tech. Building for the officials to do their inspections. During the inspection, the left rear tire was removed to find that Greg had been running with three missing wheel studs which must have broken off somewhere during the race. With three missing, this only left two to hold the tire on. This explains the left rear tire vibration!
The #27 Crew works hard to keep our car on the track and we appreciate all they do to keep us up front! This week, the crew will repair the damage to the wheel studs and make major repairs to the damage done to the "rear end" of the car. They certainly have their work cut out for them but as always -- our dedicated crew will come together and get us ready for racing again for the 75 Lap scheduled race this Saturday night (April 30, 2004).
The night ended with great finishes by the Edwards brothers. Congratulations to Danny for his fantastic run and 1st Place Victory!
Thank you to everyone who came out Saturday night to support us! Special Thanks to all of our Sponsors for helping us maintain a "winning" car and team and to Langley Speedway for making all possible!
From All of Us,
Edwards Motorsports Team #27
