GPS to honor rainchecks from season opener rainout

GREENVILLE, SC (March 23, 2004)- The huge opening night crowd that descended on the Greenville Pickens Speedway for the opening of the 59th season last Saturday will get a second opportunity for a Late Model feature event, as the rain came quickly just after the start of the opening night Late Model feature event last week. Rainchecks from that event will be honored this Saturday night, with racing in all four divisions scheduled. Gates will open at 4pm, with the first green flag at 8pm. Admission without an opening night raincheck will be $10 for adults, and as always children under 12 will be admitted free with a paying adult.

"Racing continues to be a hot ticket in this Upstate area and we are grateful for the continuing support of our fans in the Upstate and surrounding areas," said speedway marketing director Keith Cochran. "Opening night 2004 saw one of the largest crowds ever to gather at the speedway, rivaling the overflow crowd that came out for the Dale Earnhardt Memorial Backstretch dedication just after the racing legends death at Daytona in 2001."

This Saturday's feature event will be in honor of Harold 'Shorty' Vaughn, long time track electrician who passed away on Monday. "Shorty kept the lights burning for almost 40 years at the speedway and at the annual Upper South Carolina State Fair, and was a fixture here at the track for those many decades," Cochran said. "Also, he was a Hejaz Shriner and served as co-chairman of the annual GPS Shrine Race, an annual season finale event that is expected to exceed the one million dollar mark in 2004, funds raised by Upstate race fans exclusively for use by the Greenville Shriner's Children's Hospital."

The 'Shorty' Vaughn Memorial 40 will top a full race card this Saturday, with added racing scheduled for the Super Chargers, Chargers, and Renegade divisions.

The Greenville Pickens Speedway is located at the intersection of Highways 123 and 124 between Greeenville and Easley. For more information, visit their website at greenvillepickens.com, or call the track front office at 864-269-0852.
