AKRON, Ohio (Dec. 11, 2003) -- As they broadslide their cars through lefthand turns at dirt tracks around the nation, drivers in the Stacker2 Xtreme Series keep their cars headed in the proper direction by cranking their steering wheels to the right. Starting next year they'll turn right to Goodyear.
Officials of The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company and the Xtreme DirtCar Series announced earlier this week that Goodyear will be the exclusive tire supplier for the entire Xtreme DirtCar organization starting in 2004. The agreement covers the Stacker 2 Xtreme Series, the five regional Xtreme DirtCar series and the recently introduced DirtCar Weekly Series.
"Goodyear is proud to be associated with all the Xtreme series and we look forward to being involved in every step of this exciting and popular racing series," said Greg Stucker, Goodyear's director of race tire sales and marketing. "We are eager to help take Xtreme to the next level of motor sports entertainment."
Stucker noted that the Gemini brand of automotive service centers will become the official automotive service center of the Xtreme Series and all DirtCar properties. Gemini automotive service centers are part of the Goodyear family of companies.
Goodyear Racing engineers conducted a tire test with Xtreme driving star Brian Birkhofer earlier this winter, then used Birkhofer's input and other data collected during the test to tune the tire to the needs of the Xtreme cars. Goodyear's development team, long the leader in the race tire industry, put its years of experience and the extensive resources of Goodyear to work and built tires for a second test within three weeks.
"Goodyear has invested an incredible effort to develop a series of competitive tires designed for each application," said Doug Bland, president of the Xtreme Series.
The Xtreme Series is the largest organization of its kind. The alliance gives both the tiremaker and sanctioning body new marketing opportunities. "This agreement is important to the future of Goodyear Racing as a whole," said Justin Fantozi, Goodyear's marketing manager for Xtreme Dirt. "Xtreme is a forward-looking organization, as are we."
The 2004 Stacker2 Xtreme Series kicks off the 2004 season on Feb. 3-7 at East Bay Raceway in Tampa, Fla. The schedule is expected to include more than 40 events that range from coast to coast.
