Koenig wins 40-lap feature at Fredericktown Raceway
FREDERICKTOWN, Mo. -- (June 1, 2003) Pete Koenig of Farmington grabbed the lead midway through the 40-lap special Pure Street feature Sunday afternoon and held on to pick up the checkered flag and the $400 first place check.
Seventeen cars started the special feature in the Fredericktown Azalea Racefest, but when the dust settled only eight survived the ordeal.
It first appeared as if it might have been Ronnie Bader's day to shine, but he lost his led 13 laps into the event to Theran Pearl. Pearl then seemed to be in total control of his own destiny until a flat tire sent him to the pits, giving the lead to Koenig.
Dustin Homan stayed within striking distance of Koenig, but he was never able to either catch a break or overpower the veteran Koenig. Brad Thurston (who started on the pole) finish in third place behind Homan while Derek DeSpain (driving the #80) finished in fourth place and Josh DeSpain in fifth. They were followed by Russell Mathews, Leonard Betch, Mike Lindsey, Dustin Winich and Lenny Terrell.
Thurston won the first heat race with Terrell second and Betch third. Bader won the second heat with Homan second and Rusty Golightly third. Koenig won the third heat with Winich second and Rocky Stevens third.
In the RAMS Mini Stock class, Rick Ruch of Perryville was a triple crown winner (winning his heat race, the dash and the feature). Ruch held off Marty Boyer of Potosi in the feature to pick up the win. Boyer finished in second place with Mike Myer of Sikeston third, Kevin Buckley of Park Hills fourth and Wes Kintz of Piedmont was fifth. They were followed by Dave Wofford, Bill Nickelson, Brian Cox, Jason Harper and Mike Henderson. Ruch won the first heat race with Buckley second and Jon Paul Reando third. Boyer won the second heat with Wofford second and Nickelson third. Ruch won the dash with Boyer second and Buckley third.
In the Hornets/Wannabees class, Aaron Hemann was the feature winner with Jeff Zohner second, Gary Nordhaus was third, Rob Inman was fourth and Dave Heinrichs was fifth. Inman won the heat race with Heinrichs second and Hemann third.
In the Amateur ATV class, Steve Courtois was the feature winner with Luke Dailey second, Travis Wojtczuk third, Rick Edgar fourth and Alan Lamb fifth. Courtois also won the heat race with Edgar second and Lamb third. There was also a small group of Dwarf cars on hand with Don Wadlow winning the feature with Todd Williams second and Ron Wadlow third. The regular night of racing at the Fredericktown Raceway will continue this Friday night with the UMP Late Models, RAMS Mini Stocks, Pure Streets and Modifieds.
