HANSEN ENDS DRY SPELL WITH WINTER SHOOTOUT TRIUMPH
FORT WORTH-DALLAS (Dec. 5, 1998) - Michael Hansen, Dallas, has endured a long 1998 Legends Cars auto racing season. Hansen, last year's Texas Semi Pro Division titlist, ended a year-long winless streak Saturday as he captured the opening event of the Winter Shootout at Lil' Texas Motor Speedway. Thirteen-year-old Casey Smith, Austin, took the checkered flag first in a controversial 20-lap Semi Pro feature race. Ed Baumann, San Antonio, came out on top of the Masters main event, Jarrod Whitton, Carrollton, topped the Chargers and Michael Umscheid, Cedar Park, notched his first Bandolero feature checkered flag. Hansen withstood race-long challenges from Sparky Grape, Fort Worth, on the one-fifth mile asphalt oval before putting the AT&T Wireless machine in victory lane. Dallas' Jeff Blansit, placed third. In the Masters feature run simultaneously with the Pros, Baumann's race was like Hansen's. Baumann was dogged for all 20 laps by fellow Alamo City driver Gary Buchanan. Austin's Jim Spillar was third. Smith was leading the Semi Pro feature when a lapped car spun him on the next-to-final lap. Smith's lead was reinstated following sanctioning body INEX' rules and he kept the Smith Excavating 99 out front the rest of the way. The state champion held off fellow teenagers J.C. Umscheid, Cedar Park and Blake Mallory, Joshua. Whitton dominated the 18-circuit Charger main event. Mike Nowell, Lewisville, claimed the runnerup slot ahead of Trevor Seeley, Dallas. Umscheid swapped the 12-lap Bandolero feature race lead numerous times with Ryan Lawler, Colleyville. Umscheid, son of the 1998 Legends Pro division state champion David, collected the checkered ahead of Lawler and Andrew Lewis, Coppell. The second round of the Winter Shootout featuring Legends and Bandolero racing will be Saturday afternoon, Dec. 19. The first race will kick off at 1:00 p.m.
