The very hot and humid afternoon didn't slow down the super late model division Saturday night at Flat Rock Speedway. A total of three different drivers broke the SLM track record on Michigan Mobile Glass and Trim/COMCAST Cable night. Rick Knowles started the trend when he broke his own track record with a 11.292. Bill Steinhilber followed Knowles in qualifying lowering the record to 11.200. Two cars later Royce Cornett set the blistering time of 11.160.
Joe Hawes recorded his second career feature win tonight at Flat Rock. The former track champion (1991) started on the pole for the 35-lap feature and fought off challenges from Dennis Strickland and later Tim Hebert. Bill Steinhilber, who made a late charge to the front utilizing the high groove, was unable to take the top spot away coming up a car length short at the stripe.
The street stock A main got three laps in before a track blocking crash on the frontstretch red flagged the race. Jeff Kurzyniec rode his blue #62 up and over Rick Knowles' entire car. From the look of his car it appears Knowles needs an entire new body for before next week's racing action. Also involved were Jeff Sullivan, Tony Ortega and Arnold Hall. As the racecars took their place for the restart heavy rains pounded the track. The race will resume on August 7, at lap three with Carl Bumgardner leading the field. The B-Main, C-Main and Figure 8 features will also run double features on that date.
