FLAT ROCK, MI: Heavy rains, wind, thunder and lightning failed to stop Flat Rock Speedway^Òs Saturday night show, as the entire NAPA/Monroe Piston Service School Bus Figure 8 event was completed despite the elements. Nearly 2 inches of rain fell about an hour prior to the start, but great work by staff, track crews and race teams got the program going for the large crowd that turned out despite the weather. Dennis Whisman won the mud-slinging School Bus race, John Turnbull Jr. captured the Michigan Legends event, with Ken Knight and Rob Murphy picking up the Street Stock wins. Bob Thomsen of Monroe Piston presented the trophies.
A 25-car field turned out for the Michigan Legends portion of the show, and young John Turnbull Jr. showed the way, picking up the lead on lap 3 and sailing to the win in the 25 lap feature. Levi Rouster and Billy Simmons battled for the top spot at the start, with the duo locking bumpers and bringing out the yellow on lap 2. Turnbull took control and stayed out front the rest of the way for the win over Mike Lowe, Mike Leinberger, Gene Wallace, James Rader, Shaun Jennison, Rick Kilbourn, Tom Adis, Jeff Mansfield and Rocky Whittaker. Turnbull, Leinberger, Simmons and Whittaker took the heat race wins.
The ARCA Street Stocks competed in a non-point race, with 44 cars in competition. A draw was used for heat race and feature line-ups instead of time trials. The top 6 from the 4 heats moved to the A Main, with the remainder of the field making up the B Main. Newly-crowned champ Ken Knight piloted his machine to the win in the 30 lap A Main. Terry Humphrey stayed close but settled for second, with Brian Norton, Ron Allen, Scott Selmi, Jeff Kurzyniec, Jim Rae, Tony Ortega, John Sullivan and Steve Chartrand completing the top ten. Rob Murphy took the lead early and cruised to the win in the 15 lap B Main over Rick Romanini, John Huebner Sr., Henry Bradley and Larry Smouthers Jr. Rae, Knight, Randy DeMaggio and Selmi took the heat race wins.
The much-anticipated School Bus Figure 8 race was wild, as the rain and muddy infield kept the field bunched, causing lots of fender-banging, crashing and spins. Only 2 buses were left when the checkered flag fell, with Dennis Whisman taking the win over Vern Okopski Jr. Chris Benson, Lonnie York, Rick Romanini, Joey Koester, Tim Hebert and Danny Gaddis followed.
