Elko Prepares To Host ASA For Minnesota Governor's Cup 300
Pendleton, Ind. (June 12, 2002) - When ASA rolls into Elko Speedway for the Minnesota Governor's Cup 300 presented by Coca-Cola on June 15-16, it will mark the 66th track the ASA Racing Series has visited and third track in Minnesota.
Since 1978, ASA has traditionally made a stop in St. Paul (MN) for a race held on Labor Day at the Minnesota State Fair Speedway in conjunction with the state fair. This will mark the first time since 1995 that ASA has raced twice in the same season in Min nesota. That was the last season the series visited Brainerd International Speedway.
Elko Speedway is a high-banked, .375-mile oval in its 37th season of operation. The track hosts six classes of racing each Saturday night from mid-April through the last weekend of September. Those classes are late models, sportsman, thunder cars, bombers, super trucks and modifieds.
When ASA visits Elko Speedway, the facility will host three consecutive days of racing beginning on Friday, June 14 with the ACDelco 100 for Elko Late Models, plus Coca-Cola Thunder Cars, modifieds and Legends.
Activities for the Minnesota Governor's Cup 300 for the ASA Racing Series kick off on Saturday, June 15, with the first of three practice sessions beginning at noon (Central). Qualifying is scheduled for 5 p.m. Following ASA qualifying, three of Elko's reg ular divisions will take to the track, the Miller Lite Sportsman, Mid-American Trucks and bombers.
On Father's Day, Sunday, June 16, pre-race activities begin at 11 a.m. with ASA's on-track autograph session, followed by the introduction of the drivers and special honorees. The event goes green at 1 p.m.
ASA made its debut in Minnesota in 1978 at Minnesota State Fair Speedway on Labor Day. In that first race at the .5-mile oval, the late Larry Detjens, of Wausau (WI), notched his third series victory.
Tickets for the event are available at $25 for reserved seating and $20 each for general admission. Children 12 years of age or younger are admitted free to the general admission section with a paying adult. Elko Speedway is offering a three-day, general a dmission wristband/ticket for $35.
