EARLY SEASON SPECIALS DOMINATE MONTH OF MAY AT UTICA-ROME SPEEDWAY
VERNON, NY - After one of the snowiest winters on record, the Utica-Rome Speedway in Vernon will roar to life in May for the 40th anniversary season of dirt track stock car racing at the popular half-mile.
Sunday May 6 will kick off the long awaited 2001 race season with a 40-lap special for the headline DIRT 358-Modifieds. Also scheduled is a regular show for the DIRT Sportsman, DIRT Pro Stocks, Pure Stocks, and Slingshots in the long awaited season opener. Large fields of cars in all divisions are expected for the first green flags of the 2001 season from Starter Chip Burdick.
Mother's Day Sunday May 13 will begin the long road to crowning the 2001 Mr. DIRT 358-Modified and Mr. DIRT Sportsman champions as Utica-Rome will play host to the Sunoco Race Fuels 358-Modified Super DIRT Series and also the Dig Safely New York Sportsman Super DIRT Series. The 100-lap and 30-lap events respectively will kick off the 2001 edition of the Super DIRT Series, and over 60 cars are anticipated in each division.
The top 358-Modified and Sportsman teams on the DIRT circuit will engage an in all out war on the tricky Utica-Rome surface as drivers look to have good early season runs that could carry momentum through the remainder of the series. The DIRT Sportsman event will also be a Syracuse "Firecracker" Qualifier, and track points will not be issued for either all-star Super DIRT Series race. Also scheduled for the Mother's Day program sponsored by NICE N' EASY GROCERY SHOPPES will be the all-new Slingshot division with a regular show.
Sunday May 20, Utica-Rome will revert back to the weekly regular show featuring the DIRT 358-Modifieds, DIRT Sportsman, DIRT Pro Stocks, Pure Stocks, and Slingshots.
The month of May at Utica-Rome will end on Sunday May 27, when the speedway will celebrate the Memorial Day holiday in grand style with the first ever WWF Monster Truck Madness. Featured in the special show sponsored by F.X. CAPRARA CAR COMPANIES and NICE N' EASY GROCERY SHOPPES will be monster trucks from the WWF bearing the likeness of top champions The Rock and Stone Cold Steve Austin in an exciting free style competition. Also on hand will be The Rock ride monster truck, which will give FREE monster truck rides for kids! In race action will be the DIRT 358-Modifieds, DIRT Sportsman, DIRT Pro Stocks, Pure Stocks, and Slingshots.
For all shows in May, the gates will open at 4pm and racing will begin promptly at 6pm, with Slingshot heats taking the green at 5:45pm.
Utica-Rome track promoter Eric Kingsley, who has been on the mend this past winter from reconstructive rotator cuff shoulder surgery and ultimately an infection which has caused partial loss of usage of his left arm, is looking for help at the speedway this summer. Applicants must work 30-40 hours a week, must have knowledge of heavy equipment usage, and must be willing to be trained in track maintenance.
