SERIES: NLMS HEADLINE: Dublin Qualifying and Heats
DUBLIN, GA - The National Late Model Sportsman Series descended on Dublin Speedway Friday evening for Qualifying and heat races in preparation for Saturday's Dublin 125 on the high banked clay oval.
As the cars went on to the track for hot laps, it was obvious that a few drivers were having problems getting the setup right for the track. Gears and shocks were changed in between hot lap sessions and in the second session more cars were turning times in the 19 second bracket.
Time trials were the next order of business, and Everett Phillips in the Everett's Custom Service Chevy was first on the track. His time of 19.6 seconds was as quick as any car in official timing during hot laps. However the track had obviously gotten faster as Jimmy Sharpe was able to get the Pittman Concrete/J&P Construction Chevy around the 1/2 mile in a time of 19.04 seconds, an average speed of 04.538 mph. As time trials continued cars were getting faster and faster compared to their practice times and when Gene Maine, winner of the last race in Savannah, set a time of 19.02 seconds at an average speed of p4.627 mph, it looked like he had the fast time of the evening. However there were still some good cars left and sure enough Tracy Walden in the Infiltrator Systems Inc. Chevy went out and posted a time of 19.012 seconds at an average speed of 94.667 mph.
Of the remaining cars the one to watch was Wendell Durrance, who has been on a hot streak in the last two races with a win at Waycross and a second at Savannah. Despite giving the fans a thrill with a wild slide through turn four the Bill's Timber/Bennett Bros Motors Chevy could not knock Walden off the top.
The first heat race of the evening would see Walden and Durrance start side by side on the front row, with Billy Godowns in the third spot. Durrance got a good start, but Walden did too and it was Walden leading into turn one, but it was Durrance who came out of the turn in front as he used the low line to take the lead. From there it was all Durrance as he easily took the win with Godowns bringing the Godowns Farm/Henderson Chevrolet car home in second with Chuck Chitty in the C&C Powerline/J&W Engine Service Chevy coming home third. Walden, Cecil Eunice and Everett Phillips took the other transfer positions.
Heat two had a number of front runners in the lineup, but only six would transfer to the feature. Gene Maine Ives Racing/Russell Brown Racing Chevy take an early lead and hold on to for the win. Robby Metts took the second spot in the Tool Shop Contracts/Willis Painy Chevy and Henry Carter Jr in his Mimbs Farms/Sweats Portable Buildings Chevy take third. Terry Purvis, Jimmy Lee Davis and Ricky Brant took the last three transfer spots, leaving 1996 NLMS Champion Ivedent Lloyd to try and make the feature through the consolation races.
The third heat featured local favorite Tracy Mimbs starting in third behind Jimmy Sharpe and Andy Stewart in the Wendy's Auto/Griffin Plumbing/BFI Chevy. With four laps in the book, Sharpe tried to get inside Jim Fordham coming out of turn four and as the two cars were dead even, they touched. Unable to steer due to the car alongside, both cars headed for the front straight wall, with Fordham's Universal Concrete?Fordham Farm chevy taking the worst of the impact. Both cars were forced to retire, where they joined Stewart who had a seal come out of the water pump and was already in the pits. Gene Ross took a ride off the top of turn four as he tried to avoid the cars ahead and suffered a flat right rear, By the time he made it to the pits on the back of the wrecker the race had restarted and he had to change the tire and get back on the track before the end in order to take the final transfer spot. The Flexsteel/KFC/Pepsi/F. Helton Chevy took the win with newcomer to the series Andy Vickers in second and Larry Lee in third. Mike Carter, Johnny Collins and Ross took the final transfer positions.
Those cars that had had problems now had until the next day to make repairs before the consolation races and their final opportunity to make the feature. Unfortunately, Saturday brought a constant rain, and after track and Series officials conferred it was decided that the race be postponed until next Saturday. At that time, activities will pick up at the point they ended Friday, with consolation races and then the Feature race.Wendell Durrance will be on the pole for the feature, with Gene Maine starting outside. This will be a shootout between the two hottest drivers on the tour as each has scored a victory in the last two races. Mimbs and Godowns will fill the second row, Metts and Vickers will start from row three.
