IRWINDALE, Calif. (March 12, 2001) - Mark Dismore, Jr. mounted a silent charge during the running of the ASA ACDelco Series' tires.com 300 presented by BFGoodrich Tires, held at Irwindale (Calif.) Speedway, to place eighth after starting in 22nd position. The series made their first trip to the state of California in its 34-year history and racked up some high marks with the local fans. Dismore, Jr. and his WOWemployers.com team were also able to rack up some high marks, moving up to fifth in the series points standings and picking up his second top-10 finish of the two-race season.
With none of the teams in the series having tested at the half-mile facility, Dismore, Jr. and the rest of his competitors were on a level playing field. It was all up to the teams to hit the right set-up during their three practice sessions. Unfortunately for Dismore, Jr. and his No. 22 Herzog Motorsports team, practice was cut short due to an on-track incident at the start of the second practice session. Most of the session was spent repairing the WOWemployers.com Chevrolet Monte Carlo, which had received damage to the rear end.
After qualifying 22nd for the event, Dismore, Jr. knew his work would be cut out for him to try to get to the front of the field. From the drop of the green flag, the No. 22 WOWemployers.com Chevrolet slid backwards and was almost a lap down until a caution on lap 96 saved the team. Dismore, Jr. pitted for tires, fuel and adjustments and went out in the 12th position, after coming in 20th.
Dismore, Jr. was able to maintain position in the top-15 and pitted two more times to take on tires, fuel and make adjustments. Dismore Jr. and the WOWemployers.com Chevrolet were able to make it to the eighth position before the checkered flag fell, accomplishing their second top-10 effort in as many races.
"We didn't have the best car," Dismore, Jr. said. "But the WOWemployers.com team worked hard to make it a top-10 car. We kept making adjustments to the car every time we pitted. The first two stops helped, but the third one didn't help us to progress. We did the best we could and stayed out of trouble. We're really happy with the run. I'm anxious to go to Lakeland where we have already tested and ran well last year."
"The finish isn't too bad," said crew chief of the Herzog Motorsports-entry, Howie Lettow. "Considering the wreck in practice, lack of time on the track and our starting position, eighth place is great for the WOWemployers.com team. We were able to move up to fifth in points and it's a big improvement over last year. Last season, we only had two top-10 finishes for the entire year. We already have two top-10's in the first two races this year. We're really excited to get to Lakeland."
