ROSSBURG, Ohio -- Rain has shrunk the Dream IV at Eldora Speedway.

Rather than two days for the $100,000 event, the fourth annual race will be run in one day -- Saturday -- after rain showers forced postponement of Friday night's qualifying.

Because of the postponement, qualifying has been reduced: the 178 entrants will get just one qualifying lap rather than two. Time trials are set for 1 p.m. Saturday. Three nonqualifiers races for drivers not among the top 120 qualifiers will following qualifying, with heat races scheduled for 7 p.m. at the half-mile oval in eastcentral Ohio. The consolations and feature will follow the heats. The weather forecast is for scattered showers and a 30 percent chance of rain.

While rain was forecast for Friday, showers didn't fall at Eldora until 46 cars had qualified in the first of two scheduled time-trial sessions. Ronnie Johnson was the fast qualifier at 15.914 seconds when sprinkles halted qualifying about 8:35 p.m., just after defending champion Donnie Moran recorded the 12th-fastest time. Promoter Earl Baltes waited until about 11 p.m. before canceling the qualifying and rescheduling it for Saturday afternoon. ------------------------------------------------------------- AROUND THE TRACK AT ELDORA ....

HOT LAP NOTES: Skip Arp hit the wall and suffered damaged to the right side of his No. 31 .... a speedy Scott Bloomquist roared through Turns 1 and 2 when the green flag flew for his session, gently bumping Jack Boggs before blasting past Boggs a lap later .... heavyweights Bloomquist, Boggs, Billy Moyer and Donnie Moran were all in the same hot-lap session.

MLRA WELL REPRESENTED: The Midwest LateModel Racing Association invaded Eldora Speedway with a vengeance. While few MLRA drivers raced at Eldora for the Dream III -- Terry Phillips, Denny Felker, Randy and Jeff Floyd -- several more were on hand this year. Among the MLRA drivers in attendance are points leader Leslie Essary, Alan Vaughn, Phillips, the Floyds, Terry Muskrat and Al Purkey.
