Pendleton, Ind. (August 20, 2003) -- Utilizing superb race strategy, 1997 ASA National Champion Kevin Cywinski won his third event of the 2003 ASA Racing Series season at Jennerstown Speedway on Saturday, August 16. The performance, coupled with three- time series titlist Butch Miller finishing in 11th, gives Cywinski a 129-point lead after 12 of the 17 events.
Cywinski has performed consistently through 12 events, collecting 10 top-five finishes and 11 top 10s. During the first half of season, the driver of the SK Hand Tool / Great Clips Chevrolet initially won at Houston Motor Speedway in Texas and added a second trip to the winner's circle at the Mansfield Motorsports Speedway in Ohio. The Wausau, Wis., competitor added his first victory during the second half of the season, taking the checkers at Jennerstown in the rain-shortened 137 lap event. He also won his second pole of the season at Jennerstown.
Miller continues to hold the second position in the standings, scoring his most recent victory at Madison International Speedway in the BFGoodrich Tires 250 on Friday, July 18. The pilot of the Timber Wolf Chevrolet owned by Indianapolis-based SS Racing began the season with a win at USA International Speedway and followed up that stellar performance, earning a second trip to the winner's circle at Toledo Speedway. Miller has collected 10 top-10 finishes and three poles.
$50,000 Rookie of the Year point's leader Reed Sorenson is third, with his ninth top-10 finish in Pennsylvania. Driving the ACDelco / Port City Racecars / Tilton Engineering Chevrolet, Sorenson has produced a best finish of third on two occasions, initially at USA International Speedway in March and most recently at Hawkeye Downs Speedway in May. He leads Florida's Travis Kittleson by 206 markers in the rookie standings.
Rain showers that ended the race prematurely ruined Mike Garvey's dominating performance. Making a pit stop on lap 108, the Atlanta competitor charged through the field to finish in fifth position. With backing from Jani-King, Garvey has scored three victories this season, ranking fourth in the standings. He initially won at Lanier National Speedway in Georgia and then added back-to-back wins in June at Hawkeye Downs Speedway and I-70 Speedway.
Ohio's Robbie Pyle is fifth in the point standings, finishing seventh at the Jennerstown. The Ohio native has produced a best finish of second at Houston Motor Speedway, Hawkeye Downs Speedway and Mansfield Motorsports Speedway.
Freshman competitor Travis Kittleson is sixth after finishing 14th in the Pennsylvania 250. Posting his sixth top-10 finish of 2003 advanced Todd Kluever to seventh with two- time 2003 event winner Peter Cozzolino, 1995 ASA Champion Bryan Reffner and 1995 ASA Rookie of the Year Rick Beebe rounding out the top 10.
The 13th event of the 2003 ASA Racing Series is set for Sunday, August 24 at Lake Erie Speedway in Erie, Pa The Erie 250 takes the green flag at 2:00 p.m. (Local) and will be telecast on a three-hour same-day delayed basis at 5 p.m. (EDT) on SPEED Channel.
