Rich Boyer Wins Tight CRA Street Stock 250 Event At Anderson Speedway
Anderson, IN (April 8, 2006) - Rich Boyer led more than half the CRA Street Stock 250, but never got more than a few car lengths ahead of Rod Phipps all night. Boyer started fourth outside of Phipps, and when the green flag dropped both started chasing pole sitter Beau Mitchell. Mitchell dropped out due to mechanical problems on lap 25, Boyer and Phipps found themselves following Joe Beaver. Beaver got caught in lapped traffic and Phipps took the lead. Boyer then got around Phipps on a restart at lap 63. Phipps never left his tail with the two trading the lead a couple of more times before Boyer got in front for good and led the rest of the race, seeming to tow Phipps car right behind him. Beaver finished third, Chuck Barnes, Sr. fourth and Brian Hopkins finished fifth.
"I have to thank my sponsors and the guys who help make sure it is here every week." Boyer commented after the win.
Phipps was very happy with the way the race went. "I raced Rich clean, and he raced me clean. We do that every week, and this race was just the same. It was a fun race to drive." Phipps stated.
As tight as the racing was, it was also incredibly clean and accident free. The wreckers never had to put a hook to a car all night. The 250 laps had only seven yellow flags, only two after the 125-lap break. Nearly all the yellows were caused by cars spinning in traffic, with a couple in the later stages of the race caused by mechanical failures with the cars scattering fluids on the track.
Boyer avoided a near catastrophe on lap 111 when he nearly spun in some fluid left by another car, sliding sideways into Beaver. Both were able to regain control and continue losing only one spot each, dropping to second and third. Boyer was then able to regain the lead a few laps later and hold it until the end.
Hopkins passed more cars on the track than anyone else. Forced to start in the fortieth position due to a clutch failure that caused him to miss qualifying, he got down a lap early, but was able to race with the leaders through the first half of the race. After the break at lap 125, he was able to beat Boyer on the restart to regain his lap, he then ran some of the fastest laps of the race to get away from the leaders and stay on the lead lap. Following a yellow flag he caught the leaders and stayed in contention climbing to finish in fifth place.
"With a few breaks in lap traffic we might have had a chance to win, but it did not happen. Not being able to qualify really hurt us. Hopkins said. "But I am very happy to finish fifth!"
The next CRA Street Stock event is Sunday, April 23 at Winchester Speedway.
