Salem, IN October 21, 2004) -- Veteran Sunoco Super Series driver Junior Hanley has seen his huge lead in the Lefthander Challenge, sponsored by Lefthander Chassis, drop to just 3 points heading into Sunday's Sunoco Super Series season championship event at Salem Speedway. Hanley, who has admittedly struggled in qualifying this season, has been the Lane Automotive/ISKY Racing Cams Hardcharger on five occasions this season and had seemed to have an insurmountable lead to only have that lead disappear at last Sunday's series event at Baer Field Speedway after a tangle with the wall ended his day early and saw him lose 20 positions.
Tim Phillips has steadily worked his way into position to possibly claim his second Lefthander Challenge. Phillips has gained 63 overall positions this season to put him in second with one event left. Phillips won the Lefthander Challenge in 2002, his rookie year with the Sunoco Super Series. Jeff Lane is currently third, but is 32 positions behind Hanley.
The Lefthander Challenge awards a Bare Offset Lefthander Chassis to the Sunoco Super Series driver who is in the top fifteen in final series Owner Points that advanced the most positions in series point events during the 2004 season. Prior winners of the Lefthander Challenge include two-time Sunoco Super Series Champion Brian Ross, a two-time award winner also in 1998 and 1999. 2000 Series Champion and 2000 Rookie Of The Year Scott Hantz in 2000. Jim Crabtree Jr. won the award winner in 2001. In 2003, Mt. Morris, Michigan's Bobby Murany won the award driving for veteran Michigan car owner Brian Robertson.
