JACK LANDIS WINS SIZZLE MARINE 125 FOR FIRST CRA SUPER SERIES WIN
Columbus, OH (June 4, 2005) - Despite starting eighth, a first lap spin after contact from JR Roahrig that forced a complete restart, and some very strong racing by several drivers at the front, Jack Landis raced his way to his first ever CRA Super Series victory in the Sizzle Marine 125 Presented By EMH&T at Columbus Motor Speedway Saturday night. Landis is the sixth winner in six events for the CRA Super Series Presented By Spray Power in a very competitive season that has seen four first time winners including the last three events in a row.
"I thought I was going to have to go to the rear at first when I spun on that first lap, but because it was a total restart I got my spot back. I feel real bad for Scott Hantz, as I was spinning I got into him, if not I would have backed into the wall, but he cushioned the blow," Landis remarked. "We had a great Finishline car tonight!"
Crowd favorite and Columbus native Gary St. Amant started on the pole and held that lead for 109 of the first 110 laps before being passed on the outside by Landis. Landis was the Bicycle Poker Chips/Menards fast qualifier, but he drew an eight for the invert putting him in the eighth starting position. He worked his way up from that position to push St. Amant for many laps before proving passing could be done on the outside at Columbus Motor Speedway, earning Landis the Sweet Manufacturing Sweet Move of the Race Award, and a Hoosier Racing Tire Performance Award.
"It's ironic, I called Jack this morning to talk to him about car setups for this track, and then wished him luck in winning where ever he was going to race unless it was here, and then I told him I hoped he ran second--.but he drove a great race and proved you can pass up high here," St. Amant commented with a smile after the race.
Bobby Parsley challenged St. Amant in the early laps of the event. Parsley passed St. Amant on lap 16 but could not hold that lead and was back in second on the next lap. Parsley then continued to hold the second position until Landis managed to get around him to take second. Parsley finished third, with Eddie Van Meter continuing one of his strongest CRA Super Series seasons to date finishing fourth. Van Meter has been in the Top 5 three times already in 2005, with 5 Top Ten finishes in the 6 series races in 2005. Van Meter's strong finish and Scott Hantz's early trouble gives Van Meter the series driver's points lead.
Kenny Tweedy started fifth and held on to that position during the race despite furious racing by many drivers who tried to pass him throughout the race, giving him his second Top Five Finish of the season. Mike Eddy was the sixth place finisher moving up from the 20th starting position. Eddy earned the ISKY Racing Cams/Lane Automotive Hard Charger Award, Racing Electronics Most Improved Award and a Hoosier Racing Tire Performance Award. Donnie Hill finished seventh, Chris Gabehart eighth, Cometic Gasket Top Rookie Bonus award winner Boris Jurkovic finished ninth. Jurkovic earned his fourth Top Rookie bonus of the season, and his second in a row. Rounding out the Top Ten was Rick Turner who started 17th and found a little of the luck that has been eluding him all year giving him his best finish of 2005.
Kyle Hadley was the Howe Performance Award winner by gaining 10 positions in Saturday's event. St. Amant earned the Kingen Interstate Express Halfway Leader bonus by leading lap 63. Kevin Bater, Crew Chief for Landis, earned the Marvel Mystery Oil Mechanic Of The Race Award.
The next CRA Super Series Presented By Spray Power event will be the 7th Annual Rod Baker Ford George Appleton Memorial 125, Sunday, June 12, 2005 at Grundy County Speedway.
