CHUCK BARNES JR. WALKS AWAY AFTER VICIOUS CRASH AT WINCHESTER SPEEDWAY
(May 26, 2005) -- 2004 CRA Super Series Champion Chuck Barnes Jr. walked away from a vicious crash on lap 95 of the Manning Service 100 Presented By Spray Power at Winchester Speedway on Sunday, May 22nd. Barnes was pressing Chris Gabehart for the lead with just five laps remaining when the pair ran up on a slower car driven by Terry Fisher Jr., which didn't immediately move down out of the way for the leaders. Barnes made a quick move to go under Gabehart and Fisher, when Fisher suddenly moved down to give the leaders the preferred racing line. The three were then three wide going into turn one. Fisher and Barnes made contact sliding up the track into the turn one wall leaving third place running Tommy St. John no were to go. St. John's car made heavy contact with the wall and then Barnes's car, finally ending up on top of the Barnes's car.
The crash brought the crowd to its feet in silence as they waited to make sure all drivers were okay. With in minutes Barnes emerged from his battered car with no injuries. Tommy St. John was transported to the hospital for observation, but was later released, also with no injuries. Fisher also received no injuries in the crash, his car suffered a lot less damage than the other two involved.
" It was the worst wreck I have been involved in," remarked Barnes. "Thank goodness we had a safe racecar built by Port City. The roll cage stayed intact and kept Tommy's car off of me. We were battling for the lead, I thought I had an opportunity to pass Chris when TJ didn't move down right away, but that all changed real quick."
"I really like racing on the High Banked tracks, but at the speed we are going, things happen very quickly and the cars crash a lot harder. Looks like we will be out for a while until I get a new car built. Hopefully we can get some help with putting together a new car, I would like to make it back by the CRA Super Series race at Illiana Motor Speedway and would like to race in the Anderson 400 in July."
"I want to thank our sponsors Clifty Farm Country Ham, Hawk Performance and Blake Carburetion for there support all season and especially Manning Service for helping us out for the Winchester Speedway race. I also want to thank Port City for building safe racecars!"
