Barnes Gets 2nd Place Finish at Shadybowl
Builds On Sunoco Series Points Lead
Louisville, KY (May 25, 2004) --Chuck Barnes Jr. continued his great start to the 2004 race season this past Saturday with the Sunoco Super Series at Shadybowl Speedway, earning a 2nd place finish in the 16th Annual Neal Sceva Memorial 151.
Barnes started his Sunoco/Clifty Farm Country Hams /Hawk Performance Monte Carlo in 8th position for the second event in a row. Barnes was able to avoid an early wreck that involved front-runners JR Roahrig, Jeff Lane and Bud Adams. After that Barnes just kept his nose clean during an event that saw 12 caution periods and 1 red flag for 59 laps. Scott Hantz, who had lead 143 laps since the drop of the green, looked to be on his way to a win when he suddenly had to go to the pits for a flat tire during the red flag period. Mokena, Illinois native Steve Moenck assumed the lead with Barnes in second. Barnes could not catch Moenck over the last 8 laps, but held off Jeff Lane to get his second 2nd place finish with the Sunoco Super Series this season.
"I'm really pleased with our finish at Shadybowl," remarked Barnes Jr. "We had a good car, but it is just so hard to pass. I felt early in the race I was faster than both Hantz and Moenck, but I wanted to be patient and not take a chance on getting in a wreck. Moenck pulled away there at the end, I was happy to have all the fenders intact and build some on my point lead!"
With his second place finish, Barnes is currently 14 points in front of 2nd place Jeff Lane and 22 points in front of 3rd place Eddie Van Meter.
Barnes next event will be the Sunoco 100 Sunoco Super Series event at Toledo Speedway this Sunday, May 30th.
