(August 6, 2001) Clay Campbell took the lead with only two laps to go, Saturday night at Caraway Speedway, to grab his third win of the season in the Limited Late Model Division.
Brandon Hire of Lexington and Tommy Moody of Sophia were battling for the lead on lap 28, of the 30-lap event, when they crashed in turn four as Campbell drove between the spinning cars for the lead. Following a caution, the green flag came back out for just one lap and Campbell held off Jeff Garrison for the win. Finishing third was James Triplett of Lexington, Casey Kepley Jr. of Winston Salem was fourth and Larry Sink of Lexington rounded out the top five.
Campbell, who is the president of Martinsville Speedway, said the win was particularly satisfying because it was a different car than he ran in previous wins and having to hold off the field for one green flag lap.
"It was pretty intense. I didn't known how the tires were going to hold up. It was pretty nerve racking to have to make a perfect lap," Campbell said. "It was a long lap. I almost overdrove it going into turn three, but it worked out."
With the win, Campbell increased his points lead in the Limited Division by four points and now holds a 78-point lead in the season's standings.
"I knew I'd eventually get the Hayes Jewelers/Taylor Motorsports car back in victory lane," Campbell said. "I feel real good about the rest of the year."
