ATLANTA-ASA's leading rookie of the year candidate, Joey Clanton, scored his first series win Sunday afternoon parking the echosource83.com Pontiac in Victory Lane at Memphis Motorsports Park. The convincing win came after the Steve Dale Motorsports team had led the most laps and held off wily veteran Butch Miller at the end of the 200 lap event.
"We had a nice, almost comfortable, lead until that late caution. That put Butch (Miller) right on my rear bumper. He tried to mess with my head during the caution, and on the restart, but it didn't work," said Clanton. "I may be a rookie in ASA, but I've been in similar positions many times before. My Daddy always told me to guard the inside and let them have the outside. I did everything I could to stay down low because I knew he (Butch) wasn't going to pass me on the outside."
The Steve Dale Motorsports team has felt from the beginning that they were capable of winning a race in their first ASA season. They also felt that Memphis Motorsports Park might be the track for their first win.
"We were very positive going into this last race in the nine race grind. The team was getting stronger and more confident as we approached Memphis," said team manager Rich Bodmer. "Although Joey had never seen the track, both crew chiefs Gene Roberts and Jack Long, and other crew members, had been there. Everything fell into place right off the trailer, and it just got better as the weekend went along."
"Our goals at the beginning of the season were to win the Pat Schauer Memorial Rookie of the Year award, win a race and finish in the top 10 in points," concluded Bodmer. "We have one out of the way, and are looking pretty good for the other two."
