ATLANTA (July 30, 2001) - The 2001 American Speed Association (ASA) drivers' points battle is heating up, and Joey Clanton is perched and ready to make his move on the points leader. Clanton moved into the third position in the drivers' points standings two weeks ago following his fifth place finish at Salem (Ind.) Speedway. The team faces a 90-point deficit to the first place position and hopes to shrink that shortage Saturday evening.
This weekend's event, the 14th on the 2001 schedule, will mark the second time this year the No. 83 Zaxby's Real Chicken Chevrolet Monte Carlo will visit the Hawkeye Downs Speedway located in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The team visited the half-mile oval earlier in the 2001 season, notching a 12th place finish. Clanton fought a loose handling car during the April afternoon event with the No. 83 suffering minor damage during a lap 191 incident. The team is hoping to better their earlier performance by 11 positions, bringing home the victory for primary sponsor, Zaxby's Real Chicken.
The No. 83 team feels they may have a slight advantage heading into this weekend's night race. The advantage will come in the way of a little additional information regarding the car's handling at the track during evening conditions. Unlike this Saturday's race, the event held earlier this season took place during the heat of the afternoon sun. Fortunately, the No. 83 team has data collected from the 2000 season when Clanton competed in the night qualifier race. Additionally, the team will be taking the same car they competed with this season at Chicago Motor Speedway and Berlin Raceway, both events where the No. 83 team took home a top-five finish.
"We hope to have a slight advantage over the competition after running the qualifier race at night last year. We have a strong car that is designed to run at flat tracks," stated Clanton. "The points battle is so close that any advantage could mean the victory."
The team has had an outstanding sophomore season with two wins, eight top-five, and 10 top-10 finishes. The competition among the top drivers in the ASA Series is fierce with only 94 points separating first from fourth place.
The Texas Roadhouse 300 will air live this Saturday, August 4. The 300-lap event will begin at 9:00 p.m. EST and will be aired live on The National Network.
