ATLANTA-Joey Clanton did not have a good night at Indianapolis Raceway Park, but it wasn't a bad night either as he finished the echosource83.com Pontiac eighth after qualifying second to pole winner Butch Miller.
"We qualified on the outside front row and had a really good car at first, but something went wrong. Joey thought at first it was a tire going down, but we changed the right side tires and still had the problem," said Dale Motorsport crew chief Gene Roberts. "We eventually changed the left side tires and the problem still didn't go away. We couldn't cure it, but it wasn't getting any worse, so Joey had to deal with it. He not only dealt with it, he did a great job and a lot of racing."
The racing that Clanton was doing was with a pack of cars running from fifth to tenth.
"It was really fun to watch Scott Hansen, Gary St. Amant, Ricky Johnson and Joey racing out there. They were doing some hard racing and never touched," continued Roberts. "I hope the fans and everyone watching it on TNN enjoyed it because we sure did."
Despite the car not being perfect, the eighth place finish gave the team "Rookie of the Race" honors and moved them to seventh in points.
"Joey and the team did a tremendous job. They took what could have been a bad situation and made it into a good one," said team manager Rich Bodmer. "With two races remaining, our focus is on winning the Pat Schauer Memorial Rookie of the Year title and nights like this are what will do it."
