Clanton Ready for a Wild Ride at the Fair
ATLANTA (August 30, 2001) - Joey Clanton and his No. 83 Zaxby's Real Chicken crew are going to the fair this weekend. The Steve Dale Motorsports team won't be participating in any fun and games, but will be concentrating on capturing their fourth career American Speed Association (ASA) victory at the Minnesota State Fair Speedway in St. Paul, Minn. The Minnesota State Fair's activities will be capped off with the American Speed Association's appearance in the Miller Lite 300. The event, which will take place in front of packed grandstands on Labor Day Monday, will give those with the day off a chance to witness the exciting action of the best short track racing series.
Clanton and the No. 83 are making only their second appearance at the half-mile oval. The team finished 16th in last year's event and hope to better their 2000 performance. "She's a slick racetrack with an old surface. ASA is the only series that races on that track so it doesn't get much use. You have to have the best car to win. Luck doesn't play a big part at this track," said Clanton. "The fans are awesome, and their enthusiasm makes the event much more exciting."
Because of the one-day schedule, Joey Clanton will start fifth on the grid for the 300-lap event, as starting positions have been set in advance. Positions one through 20 and positions 32 through 34 will be based on 2001 owners' points standings after last week's Jennerstown (Pa.) event. NASCAR veteran and former ASA champion Dick Trickle will start in the 21st position. The remainder of the field will be determined through two-lap qualifications.
Four races remain on the 2001 event schedule with three veterans, a rookie and Clanton battling for year-end positions. The team sits just one point behind the fourth place position holder in the driver standings and five points behind the third place position holder. The standings are tight and the No. 83 needs a strong finish in the next four races to move up in the 2001 ASA Driver points standings.
The Miller Lite 300 will be aired tape-delayed on The National Network (TNN) on Tuesday, September 4 beginning at 12:30 a.m. EST. A second broadcast of the race will be aired Saturday, September 8 beginning at 4:00 p.m. EST.
