MILWAUKEE, Wis.-Joey Clanton survived transmission trouble in the echosource83.com Pontiac and posted his third fourth place finish ina a row in ASA competition at the Milwaukee Mile on Sunday afternoon.
"On lap 40 the transmission started making noise and I quit shifting in the turns. Around lap 60, third gear went and took first and second with it," said Clanton. "I radioed the pits and told them the problem and to get a transmission ready. We were fortunate not to need the spare transmission and to be able to finish the race. To finish in the top five is a great team accomplishment."
With only fourth gear, the restarts and pit stops were a prime concern. The team was unable to change tires and had to gas on the fly.
"This General Motors Vortec Red engine is really something," said Clanton. "On the restarts I would drop back about 5 car lengths to get a run, and by the time I got to the flag stand I would have to get out of the gas to keep from hitting someone. We never lost a position on a restart with only fourth gear. Pretty amazing."
"We didn't plan to, but we really put the BFGoodrich radials to the test this afternoon," said team manager Rich Bodmer. "With the transmission problems, we had to gas on the go as we didn't dare stop and change tires. We had put 200 laps on the left side tires and about 120 laps on the rights, and we were still able to finish fourth."
