ATLANTA (September 6, 2001) - Joey Clanton and his No. 83 Zaxby's Real Chicken team will return to the Memphis Motorsports Park this weekend with fond memories of the team's 2000 American Speed Association (ASA) victory still fresh in their mind. In September of last year, rookie Joey Clanton and rookie owner Steve Dale captured their first ASA career win in the Memphis 200. The team will return to the Millington, Tenn. track this Sunday when they take the green flag in the Rev Up Sports Drink 200.
The Memphis Motorsports Park is a 3/4-mile asphalt oval that requires confidence to maneuver through the track's tricky turns. Turns one and two are wide and sweeping, while turns three and four are tight. The extreme change forces drivers to keep their cool while traveling at speeds of over 115 miles per hour. 2001 marks the third season the ASA Series will visit Memphis Motorsports Park, one of the largest and fastest facilities on the 20-event schedule.
"The track is big and fast," stated Clanton. "Memphis is one of my favorites, not only because we won there last year, but because you have to be smooth and concentrate hard to do well there. We are coming off a strong finish [fourth] from Minnesota, and hopefully we will be able to stand on the podium this Sunday."
Clanton not only managed to keep his cool in last year's event, but also paced the field for 101 laps and held off ASA veteran Butch Miller in the closing laps of the race. The No. 83 dominated the race and notched up much needed points that would eventually help Clanton capture the 2000 Pat Schauer Memorial Rookie of the Year award.
This weekend's event will mark the 18th race on the 2001 schedule with the final two events of the season scheduled for this month. Time is ticking away and the team sits fourth in driver points standings with a 21-point deficit on the third place position holder.
Tune into The National Network (TNN) this Sunday, September 9 at 2:00 p.m. EST to watch the No. 83 Zaxby's Real Chicken team attempt to repeat last year's victory.
