LAKELAND, Fla. (March 26, 2001) - Joey Clanton and the No. 83 Zaxby's/Steve Dale Motorsports Chevrolet Monte Carlo finished fourth in this past weekend's Florida 200 held at the USA International Speedway in Lakeland, Florida. After starting the Florida 200 in the 16th position, Joey Clanton and the Steve Dale Motorsports team showed their tenacity by climbing 12 spots during the race to finish in the fourth spot when the checkered flag flew.
The fourth place finish was a welcome boost to Clanton and the Steve Dale Motorsports team in the chase for the American Speed Association (ASA) Series Championship. The solid finish at Lakeland put Clanton and the No. 83 into the third position in ASA Series points, just 70 points behind the leader.
While starting 16th, Clanton did not stay in that position for long, steadily cutting through the field before pitting during a competition yellow flag on lap 100. Clanton entered the pits in the seventh position before his team quickly put on fresh right side tires, fueled the car and sent the No. 83 onto pit road in the sixth position. The No. 83 Zaxby's/Steve Dale Motorsports Chevrolet would not enter the pits again during the race, staying on the track and continuing to run with the leaders. Clanton made his way into fourth position before he ran out of time and the checkered flag flew at lap 200.
"This No. 83 Zaxby's/Steve Dale Motorsports crew continues to impress me," stated an excited Clanton. "The team was able to gain me position in the pits and it was up to me to do my job on the track. This was a strong finish for us, and will definitely give us confidence going into the race at South Boston."
